For both work and play, the 2560 x 1440 (WQHD) resolution remains a popular choice for the amount of real-estate provided and the relative ease of driving it in graphically intensive applications. At least, compared to higher resolutions such as 3840 x 2160 (‘4K’ UHD). The Samsung S24H850 packs this WQHD resolution into a 23.8” screen, much like Dell P2416D and a few other models did. The S27H850, meanwhile, spreads the resolution across a more conventional 27” screen size. What is immediately striking about the monitors is the exceptionally slender bezel design. This is a dual-stage design with very thin hard outer plastic component and a slim black (dark grey) panel border inside this. The monitors don’t simply forgo practicality for the sake of looking ‘stylish’, either. They feature a fully adjustable stand with tilt, height, swivel and pivot adjustment. The OSD (On Screen Display) is controlled by a joystick or ‘JOG button’ at the rear of the monitor, to the right side as viewed from the front.

What bezels?

The monitors use 23.8” (S24) and 27” (S27) Samsung PLS (Plane to Line Switching) panels. These employ matte anti-glare screen surfaces, likely light matte anti-glare with a relatively smooth (not overly grainy) finish. The specified static contrast ratio is 1000:1 and viewing angles are 178°/178°, as typical for PLS panels. 8-bit colour is also supported – dithering use is unknown, but the larger model will almost certainly be ‘true 8-bit’ and possibly the smaller model as well. Flicker-free WLED backlights are employed offering comprehensive sRGB colour space coverage but no support for extended colour spaces such as Adobe RGB. The backlight is rated with a typical brightness of 250 cd/m² on the smaller model and 350 cd/m² on the larger model. Viewing comfort is further enhanced with the ‘Eye Saver Mode’ and ‘Warm2’ Low Blue Light (LBL) settings, which can be particularly useful for relaxing evening viewing. A 4ms grey to grey response time is specified (don’t put too much weight on this) whilst Adaptive-Sync and hence AMD FreeSync is also supported on compatible GPUs. The variable refresh rate range is 50 – 75Hz.

The rear of the monitor features a ridged matte black plastic, with the included stand attaching centrally. The stand can be removed to make way for an alternative 100 x 100mm VESA solution if preferred. The ports of the monitor include; DP 1.2a (supports Adaptive-Sync), HDMI 1.4, DP out (for MST ‘Daisy Chaining’), a 3.5mm headphone jack, 2 USB 3.0 ports and 1 USB 2.0 port. In addition to this, a USB Type-C port features. This not only carries data and charges connected devices, but supports DP via USB-C for a video signal as well. An internal power converter is used with a straight AC power cable and no external ‘power brick’ required. For those who are interested in such things, we will also quote a line from Samsung about the material choice: “The SH85 is built of various eco-friendly, PVC-free materials that contain recycled plastic, with its accessory package made in part from sugarcane bagasse”.
