There are plenty of benefits to the ‘4K’ UHD resolution, whether on the desktop, watching movies or playing games. The Samsung S28BG70 (S28BG700 with various regional suffixes) of the Odyssey G7 (G70B) series offers this, complemented by a triple digit refresh rate. HDMI 2.1 is also included, offering a 120Hz ‘4K’ UHD experience plus VRR for games consoles such as the Xbox Series X and PS5. The monitor includes the infamous Odyssey ‘cheeks’, with RGB LEDs forming part of the so-called ‘Infinity Core Lighting’ feature. Aside from this, matte black plastic dominates. The top and side bezels are dual-stage with slim panel flush with the rest of the screen plus thin hard plastic outer part. An IR remote is included for intuitive OSD (On Screen Display) control, or alternatively you can use directional buttons which face downwards in the central region of the bottom bezel.

The monitor uses a 28″ IPS-type panel, more specifically the Innolux M280DCA-E7B AAS (Azimuthal Anchoring Switch). A 144Hz refresh rate is supported with Adaptive-Sync, including Nvidia’s ‘G-SYNC Compatible’ and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro. A VRR range of 48 – 144Hz with LFC is assumed. A light to very light matte anti-glare screen surface is used, whilst 1000:1 static contrast, 178°/178° viewing angles and 10-bit (8-bit + FRC) colour support is specified. A flicker-free WLED backlight provides a 90% DCI-P3 colour gamut and 300 cd/m² typical maximum luminance. The monitor responds to HDR10 content in a basic way, with VESA DisplayHDR 400 certification. This allows luminance levels of ~400 cd/m² – not particularly high by HDR standards – and based on the panel used local dimming with 8 dimming zones for a very limited situational edge in contrast. It also allows 10-bit colour and the reasonable gamut to be put to effective use.

A 1ms grey to grey response time is specified, but as usual pay little attention to such figures. An ‘Infinity Core Lighting’ feature surrounds the stand attachment point, customisable in the OSD. The stand includes full ergonomic flexibility and can be removed with provision for 100 x 100mm VESA mounting featuring. The ports face downwards and include; DP 1.4, 2 HDMI 2.1 ports, 2 USB 3.0 ports (plus Type-B upstream), a 3.5mm headphone jack, ethernet (LAN) port and DC power input (external ‘power brick’). The monitor includes various ‘Smart Hub’ features which can be accessed via WiFi or ethernet, without the need for a system connected (Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Disney+, ‘Samsung TV Plus’, ‘Gaming Hub’ etc.) Bluetooth is also included, alongside basic integrated speakers. Low Blue Light (LBL) settings including ‘Eye Saver Mode’ and a ‘Warm2’ colour temperature setting feature, there’s an ‘Ultrawide Game View’ setting which sets the screen to 3840 x 1600 for an ultrawide experience and an ambient light sensor to adjust the image based on room lighting.
