The ‘4K’ UHD resolution provides plenty of pixels for work and play, but it can also be difficult to drive in demanding game titles. The ASUS ROG Strix XG27UCMG is built with this in mind, as a ‘triple mode’ monitor providing increased refresh rate support at lower resolutions. The monitor offers straightforward but solid-feeling styling, including; a low-profile coated metal stand base with small footprint, a dark grey plastic bottom bezel and dual-stage design at the top and sides. This encompasses a slim hard outer part plus a panel border that’s flush with the rest of the screen. The OSD (On Screen Display) is controlled by a joystick and shortcut keys at the rear of the screen, towards the right side as viewed from the front.

Low-profile stand base

A 27″ 3840 x 2160 (‘4K’ UHD) IPS panel is used with 240Hz (400Hz QHD, 488Hz FHD) refresh rate and matte anti-glare screen surface. VRR is supported via Adaptive-Sync and HDMI 2.1 VRR, allowing technologies such as Nvidia ‘G-SYNC Compatible’ and AMD FreeSync Premium to be used. Games consoles such as the PS5 and Xbox Series X can leverage a 120Hz ‘4K’ UHD signal with VRR. Other aspects of the specification include; a 1300:1 static contrast ratio, 178°/178° viewing angles and support for 10-bit colour. The monitor is flicker-free with 90% DCI-P3 colour gamut specified, alongside 400 cd/m² typical maximum luminance for both SDR and HDR. A 1ms (0.3ms min) grey to grey response time is specified, with ‘variable overdrive 2.0’ plus ELMB Sync featuring as a strobe backlight setting that can be used with VRR if you wish.

Basic HDR support is offered at the VESA DisplayHDR 400 level, with the monitor able to make potentially good use of its 10-bit colour reproduction and good DCI-P3 coverage. But without high brightness peaks or any local dimming specified to enhance the contrast side. At the rear, a customisable pixel effect ‘Aura’ RGB LED ROG logo is included towards the right side. The included stand attaches centrally via a quick-release mechanism and is fully adjustable, including height adjustment (110mm or 4.33 inches) and pivot into portrait – alternative 100 x 100mm VESA mounting is facilitated. The ports face downwards and include; an AC power input (internal power converter), HDMI 2.1, DP 1.4, USB-C (15W PD, DP Alt Mode), 2 USB 3.2 Gen1 ports (plus Type-B upstream) and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
