The ASUS ROG Strix OLED XG27AQDMG was a capable and unique monitor in many respects, but we didn’t feel it fully embraced what many people like about glossy screen surfaces. It lacked that pure ‘grain-free’ look and brought with it only some glossy benefits rather than the whole package. The ASUS ROG Strix OLED XG27AQDMGR (XG27AQDMG ‘Gen2’) upgrades the screen surface to the company’s ‘TrueBlack’ glossy finish. The stand base has also been replaced by the revised low-profile coated metal design, simpler and in our view more premium than the chunkier plastic of the original. The top and side bezels are ‘dual stage’ with slim panel border flush with the rest of the screen. With an overprovisioning of pixels (‘active area’) between the image and panel border to facilitate one of the burn-in mitigation measures. The OSD (On Screen Display) is controlled by a joystick and two buttons behind the central protrusion on the bottom bezel. An illuminated ROG motif is also included there, though this can be disabled if you prefer.

Refined stand base

A 26.5″ 2560 x 1440 (QHD or 1440p) LG Display WOLED panel is used with 240Hz refresh rate and RWBG subpixel layout. The screen surface is ‘TrueBlack’ glossy with anti-reflective treatment. VRR is supported via Adaptive-Sync and HDMI 2.1 VRR, supporting technologies such as Nvidia ‘G-SYNC Compatible’ and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro, with 48 – 240Hz VRR range plus LFC. VRR is also supported on the PS5, which lacks Adaptive-Sync support. The screen is AdaptiveSync Display 240Hz certified, too. Other points include a 1.5m:1 static contrast ratio, 178°/178° viewing angles and 10-bit colour. The monitor is flicker-free with TÜV Low Blue Light (Hardware Solution) certification, due to the peak of blue light being shifted to less energetic wavelengths to aid viewing comfort. A 99% DCI-P3 colour gamut is specified with 1300 cd/m² HDR Peak luminance, whilst a factory calibration is included with specified DeltaE <2. Passive cooling is facilitated via a heatsink, rather than the screen relying on active cooling using a fan.

The monitor responds to HDR10 content dynamically and can make good use of its per-pixel illumination, 10-bit colour support, generous colour gamut and good brightness peaks. VESA DisplayHDR TrueBlack 400 certification is included. A 0.03ms grey to grey response time is specified, with OLED technology is known to be very strong in this area. At the rear, a customisable pixel effect ‘Aura Sync’ (RGB LED) ROG logo is included towards the right side. The included stand attaches centrally via a quick-release mechanism and offers full ergonomic flexibility, including 110mm (4.33 inches) height adjustment and pivot into portrait. 100 x 100mm VESA mounting is facilitated as an alternative, with an adaptor bracket included in the box. The ports face downwards and include; 2 HDMI 2.1 ports, DP 1.4, a 3.5mm headphone jack, 2 USB 3.2 Gen1 ports (plus Type-B upstream) and an AC power input (internal power converter). So notable changes from the first generation include HDMI 2.1 rather than HDMI 2.0 and AC power rather than DC power with ‘power brick’.
