The exceptional pixel response speeds offered by OLED models make them very attractive for fast-paced gaming. The ASUS ROG Strix OLED XG27AQDPG is built with this in mind, featuring a 500Hz QD-OLED panel. The monitor offers the usual simple homely style you’d expect from the series, less overtly ‘gamery’ than some of their offerings. The top and side bezels are dual-stage with reasonably slender panel border flush with the rest of the screen, plus thin hard outer part. An overprovisioning of pixels (active area) between the image and panel border facilitates one of the ‘OLED Care Pro’ burn-in mitigation measures called ‘Screen Move’. Another uses the ‘Neo Proximity Sensor’ which can blank out the screen if nobody is detected using it, a particularly useful feature for an OLED monitor. The OSD (On Screen Display) is controlled by a joystick and two buttons behind the underhanging central section of the bottom bezel.

Not too 'gamery'

A 26.5″ Samsung Display QD-OLED (Quantum Dot OLED) panel is used with 3840 x 2160 (‘4K’ UHD) resolution, glossy anti-reflective screen surface and a 500Hz refresh rate. For games consoles such as the Xbox Series X and PS5, HDMI 2.1 allows up to 120Hz ‘4K’ UHD (plus HDMI 2.1 VRR) to be used. Adaptive-Sync is also supported allowing Nvidia ‘G-SYNC Compatible’ and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro to be used on compatible PC and console hardware, with 48 – 500Hz VRR range plus LFC. The screen is VESA AdaptiveSync Display 500Hz certified, whilst a 1.5m:1 static contrast ratio, 178°/178° viewing angles and 10-bit colour are specified. ‘Flicker-free’ illumination provides a 300 cd/m² (1000 cd/m² HDR peak) typical maximum luminance with a 99% DCI-P3 (145% sRGB) coverage specified. The monitor includes a TÜV Rheinland certified hardware solution for Low Blue Light (LBL), potentially aiding viewing comfort. A graphene film custom heatsink design is included for passive cooling which avoids the use of a fan.

VESA DisplayHDR True Black 500 certification is included – requiring higher brightness levels, including full screen white brightness, than the more common True Black 400 certification. An HDR mode with higher peak brightness is also included. With this the monitor can provide some strong brightness peaks, make good use of its per-pixel dimming and put its generous gamut plus 10-bit colour to good use. A 0.03ms grey to grey response time is specified, with OLED technology known for exceptional pixel responsiveness. ‘OLED Anti-Flicker 2.0’ is included to reduce flickering in some situations when using VRR. ELMB also features, a BFI mode. At the rear, a customisable pixel effect ‘Aura Sync’ (RGB LED) ROG logo is included towards the right side. The stand is fully adjustable, including 110mm (4.33 inches) height adjustment and pivot into portrait. It attaches centrally via a quick-release mechanism and can be removed to reveal 100 x 100mm VESA mounting provision. The ports face downwards and include; an AC power input (internal power converter), 2 USB 3.2 Gen1 ports (plus Type-B upstream), 2 HDMI 2.1 ports (48Gbps), DP 1.4 (with DSC) and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
