For those playing a variety of games, it’s sometimes worth sacrificing image quality and maximising performance. The AOC U27G4R is designed for both immersive and fast paced competitive play, with 160Hz UHD (320Hz FHD) IPS panel. The monitor uses mainly dark matte materials, with a red ‘cable tidy’ loop near the bottom of the stand neck for a bit of contrast. A polygonal stand base is also used, something of a trademark on various recent gaming monitors released by the manufacturer. The top and side bezels of the screen are dual-stage, with slim panel border flush with the rest of the screen plus thin hard plastic outer part. The OSD (On Screen Display) is controlled by buttons which face downwards, towards the right side of the bottom bezel.

Black with a little red

A 27” IPS panel is adopted with 3840 x 2160 (‘4K’ UHD) resolution, matte anti-glare screen surface and 160Hz native refresh rate. The screen offers ‘dual mode’ (or ‘dual frame’) functionality, allowing it to run up to 320Hz at the 1920 x 1080 (Full HD or 1080p) resolution. Adaptive-Sync (and presumably HDMI 2.1 VRR) is supported, allowing technologies such as Nvidia ‘G-SYNC Compatible’ and AMD FreeSync to be used. A 48 – 160Hz (48 – 320Hz FHD) VRR range plus LFC is supported. Other aspects of the specification include; a 1000:1 static contrast ratio, 178°/178° viewing angles, a 1ms grey to grey (0.5ms MPRT with strobe backlight) response time and 8-bit colour support. A flicker-free WLED backlight provides a 95.6% DCI-P3 (124.7% sRGB) colour gamut plus 400 cd/m² typical maximum luminance.

The monitor offers a basic HDR10 response at the VESA DisplayHDR 400 level. 10-bit colour processing can be used and the reasonable gamut put to potentially good use, but no local dimming is specified and the brightness capability is very limited by HDR standards. The stand attaches centrally and can be removed to reveal provision for 100 x 100mm VESA mounting. The stand provides full ergonomic flexibility, including 130mm (5.12 inches) height adjustment and pivot into portrait. The ports mainly face downwards and include; AC power input (internal power converter), 2 HDMI 2.1 ports, DP 1.4 (with DSC), a 3.5mm headphone jack, USB 3.1 Gen1 (with fast-charging) plus Type-B upstream. 3 additional USB 3.1 Gen1 ports face towards the right, as viewed from the front. 2-system PiP/PbP is supported.

VESA mounting compatible

Further details can be found on the manufacturer’s website. The monitor is listed with an MSRP ~£300.
