Further information on supporting our work. The immersion and improved Field of View (FOV) for gaming can make the 21:9 experience very attractive. The Samsung Odyssey OLED G85SD (G8 / S34DG85) provides this, in QD-OLED flavour for strong responsiveness and image quality characteristics. The monitor includes the signature styling of the series, with sleek design which includes metal stand elements. The top and side bezels are dual-stage, with slim panel border flush with the rest of the screen plus thin hard plastic outer part. An ‘active area’ (overprovisioning of pixels) between the image and panel border is used for one of the image retention mitigation measures. The OSD (On Screen Display) can be controlled by a central joystick at the rear of the screen or using the included IR remote.
A 34″ 3440 x 1440 (21:9 ultrawide) Samsung Display QD-OLED panel is used with 175Hz refresh rate and VRR, including Adaptive-Sync and HDMI 2.1. This allows VRR technologies including Nvidia ‘G-SYNC Compatible’ and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro to be used, with 48 – 240Hz VRR range plus LFC assumed. A matte finish is used for the screen rather than the usual QD-OLED glossy anti-reflective surface, whilst a 1800R (moderate) curve is included to draw you into the experience a bit. Other aspects of note include a 1m:1 static contrast ratio, 178°/178° viewing angles and 10-bit colour support. The screen is flicker-free with 99% DCI-P3 (plus strong Adobe RGB coverage – no value specified) colour gamut and 250 cd/m² typical maximum luminance (1000 cd/m² HDR peak specified for panel). The monitor provides a dynamic HDR10 experience with its per-pixel illumination, 10-bit colour and the generous colour gamut being put to good use. Some good brightness bursts can be outputted under HDR as well.
A 0.03ms grey to grey response time is specified – ignore the exact figure, though OLED technology is known for its exceptional pixel responsiveness. The stand provides tilt and height (120mm or 4.72 inches) adjustment, with customisable ‘Core Sync’ RGB LED lighting surrounding the attachment point. It can be removed using a quick-release latch and an alternative 100 x 100mm VESA compatible solution used. The ports face backwards beneath the stand attachment point and include; DC power input (external ‘power brick’), DP 1.4, 2 HDMI 2.1 ports and 2 USB 3.0 ports (plus Type-B upstream). The monitor includes integrated 10W speakers and features Tizen OS with ‘Smart TV’, ‘Gaming Hub’ and WiFi functionality.
Further details can be found on the manufacturer’s website. The monitor is listed for ~$1200 USD.
