~27″ UHD OLEDs provide exceptional image quality, with a tight pixel density and strong image quality characteristics. Gamers also enjoy using these for their strong pixel responsiveness. The Samsung Odyssey OLED G80SH (G8 / S27HG80) is built with this in mind, with a 240Hz UHD QD-OLED panel. This model features a passive heat pipe cooling system rather than an active cooling solution (i.e. fan), plus the usual sleek metallic design associated with the series. The top and side bezels are dual-stage, with panel border flush with the rest of the screen plus thin hard outer part. An ‘active area’ (overprovisioning of pixels) between the image and panel border is used for one of the image retention mitigation measures. The OSD (On Screen Display) is controlled by a joystick at the rear of the screen, towards the central region.

Samsung styling

A 26.5″ 3840 x 2160 (‘4K’ UHD) Samsung Display QD-OLED panel is used with 240Hz refresh rate and VRR, including Adaptive-Sync and HDMI 2.1. This allows VRR technologies such as Nvidia ‘G-SYNC Compatible’ and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro to be used, with assumed 48 – 240Hz VRR range plus LFC. A 120Hz ‘4K’ UHD signal with HDR and VRR can also be used on modern consoles including the Xbox Series X and PS5. The screen has a matte finish rather than the usual QD-OLED glossy anti-reflective treatment. A 1.5m:1 static contrast ratio, 178°/178° viewing angles and 10-bit colour are specified, alongside a 0.03ms grey to grey response time. The screen is ‘flicker-free’ with ~99% DCI-P3 colour gamut and 250 cd/m² typical maximum luminance (~1000 cd/m² HDR peak specified for panel).

The monitor can provide a dynamic HDR10 experience with 10-bit colour plus the generous colour gamut and per-pixel illumination being put to good use. VESA DisplayHDR True Black 400 certification is included, with higher peak brightness modes included as well. The stand is fully adjustable, including 120mm (4.72 inches) height adjustment and pivot into portrait – with a customisable ‘Core Sync’ RGB LED lighting element surrounding the attachment point. The stand can be removed via quick-release mechanism and replaced by an alternative 100 x 100mm VESA compatible solution. The ports include; a 3.5mm headphone jack, HDMI 2.1, DP 2.1 (UHBR20), USB-C (98W PD, DP Alt Mode, upstream data), 2 USB Type-A downstream ports and DC power input (external ‘power brick’).
