Some people enjoy the contrast advantages of VA models, with 27″ QHD options being versatile choices. The Samsung Odyssey G5 G55C (S27CG55 with various regional suffixes) is one such offering, complemented by Samsung’s signature steep curve. The monitor has a chunky plastic appearance with prominent cheek pieces (though no RGB LEDs) on the bottom bezel and a large ‘penguin foot’ stand. The top and side bezels are dual-stage, with slim panel border flush with the rest of the screen plus thin hard plastic outer part. The OSD (On Screen Display) is controlled by a joystick which faces downwards beneath the centre of the bottom bezel.

Familiar Odyssey design

A 27″ VA panel is used with 2560 x 1440 (QHD or 1440p) resolution and steep 1000R curve, designed to draw you into the experience. A 165Hz refresh rate is supported alongside Adaptive-Sync, allowing VRR technologies such as AMD FreeSync and Nvidia ‘G-SYNC Compatible’ to be used with 48 – 165Hz VRR range plus LFC. Other aspects of note include a 2500:1 static contrast ratio, 178°/178° viewing angles and 8-bit colour. A flicker-free WLED backlight provides a 300 cd/m² typical maximum luminance – no colour gamut is specified. Basic HDR10 support is provided, allowing the screen to respond to HDR content with 10-bit colour processing. But not requiring the high brightness, local dimming or the generous gamut required for a true HDR experience. Low Blue Light (LBL) settings are included to potentially aid viewing comfort. A 1ms MPRT response time is specified using the MBR (Motion Blur Reduction) strobe backlight setting. ‘Low Input Lag’ is also noted. The stand is tilt-only, with 75 x 75mm VESA holes included for alternative mounting. The ports face downwards and include; a 3.5mm headphone jack, HDMI 2.0, DP 1.4 and DC power input (external ‘power brick’).

Further details can be found on the manufacturer’s website. The monitor is listed for the equivalent of ~$200 USD.

Caution: Current retailer listings may point to the older ‘G55T’ rather than ‘G55C’ model.
