For a mixture of gaming and other uses, 27″ QHD models with 240Hz+ refresh rates can be very attractive. Long-established American electronics company RCA (yes, they’re the ones who designed the RCA connector) have now entered the monitor space with their own solution, in the form of the Evolution Premium (M27PG135F). The monitor combines matte black materials with a few bright red elements, such as the join between stand neck and tripod-style base. The top and side bezels adopt the popular dual-stage design, with slim panel borders flush with the rest of the screen plus thin hard plastic outer part. The OSD (On Screen Display) is controlled by a joystick at the rear, towards the right side as viewed from the front.
A 27″ 2560 x 1440 (QHD or 1440p) IPS-type panel is used with 240Hz refresh rate and Adaptive-Sync support. This allows VRR technologies such as AMD FreeSync and Nvidia ‘G-SYNC Compatible’ to be used, with assumed 48 – 240Hz VRR range plus LFC. Other aspects of note include a 1000:1 static contrast ratio, 178°/178° viewing angles and matte anti-glare screen surface. A flicker-free WLED backlight delivers a 300 cd/m² typical maximum luminance and 95% DCI-P3 colour gamut. The monitor includes basic HDR10 support, allowing 10-bit colour processing to be used and the gamut to be put to good use. The brightness is very limited by HDR standards and local dimming to enhance contrast is not specified, however.
A 1ms grey to grey response time is specified (pinch of salt as usual), whilst Low Blue Light (LBL) settings are included to promote a more relaxing viewing experience. The included stand offers tilt, height and pivot adjustment and can be removed via quick-release mechanism to reveal provision for 100 x 100mm VESA mounting. Customisable RGB LED lighting is included towards the top, at the rear. The ports face downwards and include; DC power input (external ‘power brick’), 2 USB ports (plus Type-B upstream), 2 HDMI 2.0 ports, DP 1.4, USB-C (90W PD, DP Alt Mode, upstream data) and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Integrated low watt stereo speakers are also included. KVM functionality is offered, allowing quick switching of display inputs and USB peripherals between 2 systems.
Further details can be found on the manufacturer’s website. The monitor is listed for ~$430 USD. A 165Hz variant without USB-C is also listed, the Evolution Standard (M27SG134F) for ~$300 USD.
