Further information on supporting our work. For responsive gaming and overall image quality, OLED technology is highly sought-after. The MSI MAG 272UP QD-OLED E16 provides this, focusing on a 165Hz ‘4K’ UHD experience. Slightly cut down compared to the 240Hz more commonly found on QD-OLEDs in this category, designed to cut product cost without resorting to a lower brightness version of the panel. The monitor offers the ‘simple’ design often seen on MSI’s gaming models, with plenty of matte materials and an unfussy stand design. The top and side bezels are dual-stage with panel border flush with the rest of the screen plus thin hard plastic outer part. An overprovisioning of pixels or ‘active area’ surrounds the image, used for pixel shifting which is one of several ‘OLED Care 2.0’ image retention mitigation measures. The OSD (On Screen Display) is controlled by a joystick beneath the central region of the bottom bezel.
A 26.5″ Samsung Display QD-OLED panel is used with 3840 x 2160 (‘4K’ UHD) resolution and 165Hz refresh rate. The usual glossy anti-reflective screen surface is provided – this does not include ‘DarkArmor Film’ (‘QuantumBlack’) to reduce brightening up in lighter rooms, but does offer “2.5x more scratch-resistance” with screen upgraded from ‘2H’ to ‘3H’ hardness. VRR is supported via Adaptive-Sync (and presumably HDMI 2.1 VRR), allowing technologies such as Nvidia ‘G-SYNC Compatible’ and AMD FreeSync to be used, with 48 – 165Hz VRR range plus LFC. Other aspects of note include a 1.5m:1 static contrast ratio, 178°/178° viewing angles and 10-bit colour support. The monitor is ‘flicker-free’, with 250 cd/m² (1000 cd/m² HDR peak) typical maximum luminance. A 99% DCI-P3 (98% Adobe RGB, 138% sRGB) coverage is specified, alongside a 0.03 ms grey to grey response time – OLED technology is known to be strong in this area.
The monitor is certified at the VESA DisplayHDR True Black 400 level, where it can make goods use of its per-pixel illumination, 10-bit colour and generous gamut. Alternative modes with higher brightness peaks are also included for HDR. You can customise the brightness curve under HDR if you want to limit the brightness in some scenes or achieve a more ‘uniform’ experience. The stand is fully adjustable, including height adjustment (110mm or 4.33 inches) and pivot into portrait. The included stand can be removed to reveal provision for alternative 100 x 100mm VESA mounting, if preferred. The ports face downwards and include; a 3.5mm headphone jack, 2 HDMI 2.1 ports, DP 1.4, USB-C (15W PD) and AC power input (internal power converter). A graphene film custom heatsink design is included for passive cooling, avoiding the use of an active cooling fan. A factory calibration with specified DeltaE ≤2 is included, whilst the 3-year warranty includes OLED burn-in cover.

Further details can be found on the manufacturer’s website. Information on price and availability still to come.
