Further information on supporting our work.OLED monitors can offer a highly immersive experience, with strong image quality helping bring content to life. The LG UltraGear 39GX950B-B (Evo GX9) provides this, with a large high resolution OLED screen. The monitor has a low-profile metal base plate for the stand and dual-stage bezels, with a panel border flush with the rest of the screen plus hard outer part. As usual for an OLED, there’s also an overprovisioning of pixels (active area) between the image and panel border to facilitate one of the burn-in mitigation measures. The OSD (On Screen Display) is controlled by a joystick beneath the central region of the bottom bezel.
A ~39″ LG Display Tandem WOLED panel is used with 5120 x 2160 (21:9 ultrawide) resolution, delivering a pixel density of 143 PPI (Pixels Per Inch) – similar to a ~32″ ‘4K’ UHD display. A 1500R or moderate curve is included to help draw you into the experience a bit and add an extra feeling of depth, without feeling unnatural. The monitor supports a 165Hz (‘Dual Mode’ with 330Hz 2560 x 1080 WFHD) refresh rate and VRR via both Adaptive-Sync and HDMI 2.1 VRR. This allows VRR technologies including Nvidia ‘G-SYNC Compatible’ and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro to be used, with 48 – 165Hz (48 – 330Hz WFHD) VRR range plus LFC expected. The monitor includes a matte anti-glare screen surface and has a 1.85m:1 static contrast ratio, 178°/178° viewing angles and 10-bit colour specified. The screen is ‘flicker-free’ with 99.5% DCI-P3 colour gamut specified, alongside 335 cd/m² typical maximum luminance (1500 cd/m² HDR peak). The monitor provides a lively HDR10 experience, allowing it to make good use of its generous gamut alongside 10-bit colour processing and strong brightness peaks. The monitor is VESA DisplayHDR True Black 500 certified – requiring higher brightness levels, including full screen white brightness, than the more common True Black 400 certification. An HDR mode with higher peak brightness is also included.
A 0.03ms grey to grey response time is specified – OLED technology is known for its exceptional pixel responsiveness. The screen supports hardware calibration via LG Calibration Studio. The monitor also includes an ‘AI Boost’ upscaling feature which doesn’t rely on a specific GPU for support. At the rear, customisable ‘Unity Hexagon Lighting 2.0’ RGB LED lighting is included. The stand offers tilt, swivel and height adjustment, with 100 x 100mm VESA mounting facilitated as an alternative. The ports include; 2 HDMI 2.1 ports, DP 2.1 (UHBR 20), USB-C (90W PD, DP Alt Mode, upstream data), 2 USB 3.2 Gen2 ports and a DC power input (external ‘power brick’). A downwards facing 4-pole 3.5mm headphone jack is also included, whilst 2 x 7W speakers are included with ‘AI Sound’ setting designed to enhance clarity and sound separation. Further details can be found on the manufacturer’s website, with information on price and availability still to come.
