The 3440 x 1440 UltraWide experience can be very rewarding for gamers. And also nice to have on the desktop or when watching video content that suits the 21:9 aspect ratio. The AOC CU34G3S (CU34G3S-BK owing to mainly black stand) of the AGON G3 Series features a 34″ screen of this resolution, combined with a generous curve to help draw you into the experience. Design cues are taken from older models such as the popular CU34G2X, with an interestingly-shaped stand base and plenty of matte black plastic combined with some red plastic elements. In our experience these tend to look more subdued and less eye-catching than in marketing images of the product. The top and side bezels are dual-stage, with a slim panel border flush with the rest of the screen plus a slim hard plastic outer part. The OSD (On Screen Display) is controlled by buttons which face downwards on the underside of the bottom bezel, towards the right side.

A steeper curve

The monitor uses a 34″ 3440 x 1440 (21:9 UltraWide) VA panel with steep 1000R curve. A 165Hz refresh rate is supported alongside Adaptive-Sync, including AMD FreeSync Premium and Nvidia’s ‘G-SYNC Compatible Mode’. A 48 – 165Hz VRR range plus LFC is offered. Other aspects of note include a light matte anti-glare screen surface, 3000:1 static contrast ratio, 178°/178° viewing angles and true 8-bit colour output. A flicker-free WLED backlight delivers 300 cd/m² typical maximum luminance and 89% DCI-P3 coverage (119% sRGB). HDR10 support is included, very basic HDR support that falls short of even the lowest VESA DisplayHDR level. Allowing 10-bit colour processing to be used with the aid of GPU dithering and allowing the reasonably generous colour gamut to be put to good use. But not requiring a particularly high luminance or local dimming on the backlight to enhance contrast.

A 4ms grey to grey response time is specified (approach with caution) alongside a 1ms MPRT response time using the MBR (Motion Blur Reduction) strobe backlight setting. The stand is attached centrally using a quick-release mechanism and can be removed to make way for an alternative 100 x 100mm VESA compatible solution. The stand offers tilt, swivel and height (130mm or 5.12 inches) adjustment. The ports face downwards and include; AC power input (internal power converter), a 3.5mm headphone jack, 2 DP 1.4 ports, 2 HDMI 2.0 ports and 4 USB 3.2 Gen1 ports (plus upstream). 2 x 5W speakers are included for potentially fairly rich and powerful sound output.

An UltraWide rear
