The Samsung C27G55T (LC27G55T with various regional suffixes) and C32G55T (LC32G55T with various regional suffixes) of the Odyssey G5 series provide a pared back experience. The aesthetics are carried over to a degree, certainly in terms of overall shape and prominent ‘cheeks’. There are no RGB LED lights included this time, though. The top and side bezels are dual-stage, with a slim hard plastic outer component and slender panel border that’s flush with the rest of the screen. The OSD (On Screen Display) is controlled by a joystick facing downwards beneath the Samsung logo, in the middle of the bottom bezel.
A 26.9″ (C27) or 31.5″ (C32) Samsung SVA (‘Super’ Vertical Alignment) panel is employed, with 1000R (relatively steep) curve. Designed to draw you into the experience and potentially enhance viewing comfort. A 2560 x 1440 (WQHD) resolution is supported, whilst a light matte anti-glare screen surface is employed. A 144Hz refresh rate is supported alongside Adaptive-Sync – including support for AMD FreeSync Premium, with a 48 – 144Hz variable refresh rate range (plus LFC). A 2500:1 static contrast ratio is specified, alongside 178° horizontal and vertical viewing angles and an 8-bit colour depth. A flicker-free WLED backlight is used, offering ~sRGB colour space coverage and a 250 cd/m² typical maximum luminance. The monitor will respond to HDR10 content, but only in a very rudimentary way. It enables 10-bit colour processing, with the help of GPU dithering. Unlike the Odyssey G7 models, the G5 lacks the colour gamut, local dimming support or powerful backlight to deliver anything approaching a compelling HDR experience.
A 1ms MPRT response time is specified, using an MBR (Motion Blur Reduction) strobe backlight setting. A ‘Low Input Lag’ mode is also included, alongside a ‘Black Equalizer’ gamma enhancement feature to improve the visibility of dark areas. The rear of the monitor is mainly textured matte black plastic – without the LED lighting elements of the G7 models. The included stand offers tilt as the only ergonomic flexibility, another difference to note between the series. 75 x 75mm VESA holes are included for alternative mounting. The ports face downwards in the central region and include; DC power input (external ‘power brick’), DP 1.2a+ (HDR feature set), 2 HDMI 2.0 ports and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
