Users no longer have to choose between refresh rate and image quality, with an ever-increasing range of monitors combining these two attributes. The ViewSonic XG2405 of the company’s ELITE gaming monitor series offers an interesting follow up to the XG240R and earlier XG series models. Replacing the TN (Twisted Nematic) panel with an IPS-type (In-Plane Switching or similar) variant. Aesthetics remain unchanged from the older model, with a ‘stealthy’ matte black appearance. The most noticeable exterior change comes from the fact the panel used offers a dual-stage bezel design. The bezels are therefore more slender overall, with a slim panel border that’s flush with the rest of the screen plus a slender hard plastic outer component. The OSD (On Screen Display) controls have also been relocated to the rear, pressable buttons running down the bottom right as viewed from the front.

A stealthy look

A 23.8″ 1920 x 1080 (Full HD) IPS-type panel is used, offering a 1000:1 specified static contrast and 178° horizontal and vertical viewing angles. More specifically the Panda LC238LF1F FFS (Fringe-Field Switching) IPS-type CELL (panel minus backlight arrangement), as seen in the very capable AOC 24G2(U). A 144Hz refresh rate is supported alongside Adaptive-Sync, including AMD FreeSync on compatible GPUs and systems (48 – 144Hz plus LFC). 8-bit colour is supported via 6-bit + FRC, whilst a medium matte anti-glare screen surface is employed. Albeit with a smoother surface texture than that seen on competing TN models, keeping lighter content looking smoother in comparison. A flicker-free WLED backlight is used, offering a 250 cd/m² typical maximum luminance and 104% sRGB coverage. This is quite different to the extended colour gamut of the AOC model, with 126% sRGB coverage specified. Colours within the sRGB space will appear ‘rich and natural’ without the extra hint of vibrancy and saturation that a wider gamut provides.

Other aspects to note include a range of ‘Blue Light Filter’ Low Blue Light (LBL) settings to enhance viewing comfort, particularly useful in the evenings. A 1ms grey to grey response time is specified, which as usual should be taken with a grain or two of salt. The monitor has a ‘1ms Mode’ strobe backlight setting which can be activated in place of Adaptive-Sync. The included stand offers full ergonomic flexibility and attaches using 100 x 100mm VESA. The rear of the monitor is matte black plastic, without any RGB LED lighting feature. The ports face downwards and include; AC power input (internal power converter), 2 HDMI 2.0 ports, DP 1.2a and a 3.5mm headphone jack. 2 x 2W speakers are also included, for basic sound output. At the top of the stand neck you’ll find a retractable headphone hook, whilst a detachable cable-tidy loop is included towards the bottom of the stand, facing backwards.

A plain rear

More information is available on the manufacturer’s website. The monitor is available for ~€200 (~$190 USD). A 27″ variant (XG2705) is also available.
