Further information on supporting our work. The combination of exceptional pixel density, strong image quality and response characteristics make ~27″ ‘4K’ UHD QD-OLEDs very attractive propositions. The Samsung Odyssey OLED G81SF (G8 / S27FG81) provides this. The monitor includes the signature styling of the series, with a sleek design which includes metal stand elements. It’s passively cooled with a heat pipe based system rather than relying on a fan. The top and side bezels are dual-stage, with slim panel border flush with the rest of the screen plus thin hard plastic outer part. An ‘active area’ (overprovisioning of pixels) between the image and panel border is used for one of the image retention mitigation measures. The OSD (On Screen Display) is controlled by a joystick at the rear of the screen, towards the central region.
A 26.5″ 3840 x 2160 (‘4K’ UHD) Samsung Display QD-OLED panel is used with 240Hz refresh rate and VRR, including Adaptive-Sync and HDMI 2.1. This allows VRR technologies such as Nvidia ‘G-SYNC Compatible’ and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro to be used, with 48 – 240Hz VRR range plus LFC assumed. It also allows a 120Hz ‘4K’ UHD signal with HDR and VRR to be used on the PS5 and Xbox Series X. A matte finish is used for the screen rather than the usual QD-OLED glossy anti-reflective surface. Other aspects of note include a 1m:1 static contrast ratio, 178°/178° viewing angles and 10-bit colour support. The screen is flicker-free with 99% DCI-P3 (plus strong Adobe RGB coverage – no value specified) colour gamut and 250 cd/m² typical maximum luminance (1000 cd/m² HDR peak specified for panel). The monitor provides a dynamic HDR10 experience with its per-pixel dimming, 10-bit colour and the generous colour gamut being put to good use. The monitor is VESA DisplayHDR True Black 400 certified – an HDR mode with stronger brightness peaks is also included.
A 0.03ms grey to grey response time is specified, with OLED technology known for exceptional pixel responsiveness. The stand is fully adjustable, including height (120mm or 4.72 inches) adjustment and pivot into portrait. A customisable ‘Core Sync’ RGB LED lighting element surrounds the attachment point. The stand can be removed using a quick-release latch and an alternative 100 x 100mm VESA compatible solution used, if preferred. The ports face backwards beneath the stand attachment point and include; 2 USB 3.2 Gen1 ports (plus Type-B upstream), a 3.5mm headphone jack, 2 HDMI 2.1 ports, DP 1.4 (with DSC) and a DC power input (external ‘power brick’).
Further details can be found on the manufacturer’s website. A 31.5″ variant is also listed (S32FG81). Information on price and availability still to come.
