Samsung (and other manufacturers) have a tendency to add a curve to such screens, which isn’t to everyone’s taste and in the case of steep curves can feel quite misplaced on 16:9 screens. The Samsung Odyssey G5 G51C (S27CG51 with various regional suffixes) instead offers a flat VA experience. The monitor offers familiar styling for the series, with slim-necked ‘penguin-foot’ stand and extensive use of matte black plastic. The top and side bezels are dual-stage, with slim panel border flush with the rest of the screen and thin hard plastic outer part. The bottom bezel includes ‘cheek piece’ protrusions either side, but unlike some of the higher end offerings these don’t include RGB LEDs. The OSD (On Screen Display) is controlled by a joystick which faces downwards beneath the centre of the bottom bezel.
A 27″ 2560 x 1440 (QHD or 1440p) resolution VA panel is used with 165Hz refresh rate, 178°/178° viewing angles, 3000:1 static contrast ratio and 8-bit colour support. Adaptive-Sync features, including AMD FreeSync Premium with 48 – 165Hz VRR range plus LFC. A flicker-free WLED backlight provides a 300 cd/m² typical maximum luminance and ~sRGB colour gamut. Basic HDR10 support is included, allowing the screen to respond to HDR content with 10-bit colour processing. But not requiring the high brightness, local dimming or the generous gamut that forms a true HDR experience. A 1ms MPRT response time is specified using the MBR (Motion Blur Reduction) strobe backlight setting. The stand offers full adjustability, including a limited 100mm (3.94 inches) height adjustment and pivot into portrait. 100 x 100mm VESA mounting is supported as an alternative. The ports face downwards and include; a DC power input (external ‘power brick’), 2 HDMI 2.0 ports, DP 1.4 and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
