Further information on supporting our work.A plethora of medium refresh rate 27″ QHD IPS options are available – highly sought-after due to their versatility. The Samsung Odyssey G5 G50D (S27DG50 with various regional suffixes) is one such option. The monitor has rather pared-back aesthetics for one in the Odyssey series, perhaps taking a leaf out of Dell’s G-series book. Dark matte plastics dominate and the stand base is relatively compact. The top and side bezels are slim with dual-stage design, including slender hard plastic outer part flush with the rest of the screen and slim hard outer part. The OSD is controlled by a joystick beneath the centre of the bottom bezel, as part of a central ‘unit’ protruding beneath the bottom bezel.
A 27″ IPS panel is used with 2560 x 1440 (QHD or 1440p) resolution, matte anti-glare screen surface and 180Hz refresh rate. Adaptive-Sync features, allowing VRR technologies such as Nvidia ‘G-SYNC Compatible’ and AMD FreeSync to be used with assumed 48 – 180Hz VRR range plus LFC. Other aspects of note include 178°/178° viewing angles, a 1000:1 static contrast ratio and 8-bit colour support. A flicker-free WLED backlight provides a 350 cd/m² (400 cd/m² HDR) typical maximum luminance and 99% sRGB colour gamut. Basic HDR10 support is provided at the VESA DisplayHDR 400 level. This doesn’t require the high brightness, local dimming or the generous gamut that creates a true HDR experience. But it allows the screen to respond to HDR content with 10-bit colour processing and a slight boost in brightness. A 1ms grey to grey response time is specified, to be taken with the usual pinch of salt. The stand is fully adjustable, including 120mm (4.72 inches) height adjustment and pivot into portrait. 100 x 100mm VESA holes are included for alternative mounting. The ports face backwards with vertical orientation beneath the stand attachment point and include; a 3.5mm headphone jack, HDMI 2.0, DP 1.2a+ (HDR feature set) and DC power input (external ‘power brick’).
Further details can be found on the manufacturer’s website. The monitor is listed for ~$330 USD. A ~32″ variant is also listed, the S32DG50.
