When it comes to all-round performance, including relatively strong contrast and vibrant colour output, the Samsung C34F791 (CF791) is an excellent UltraWide choice. With the addition of Thunderbolt 3 ports being the only obvious difference, the Samsung C34J791 (also called C34J79 of the CJ79 series) is about as minor a revision as Samsung could make when launching a new variant of a monitor. The aesthetics diverge from many monitors on the market by combining white and silver rather than using more common black plastics. The dish-shaped stand design, silver plastic bottom bezel and dual-stage bezels (with slim panel border and a thin hard outer component) are key design cues. The OSD (On Screen Display) is controlled by a joystick, or as Samsung calls it a ‘JOG button’ at the rear of the monitor, towards the right side as viewed from the front.
The monitor uses a 34” Samsung SVA (‘Super’ Vertical Alignment) panel with a 3440 x 1440 (21:9 aspect ratio) resolution, 3000:1 specified static contrast and 178°/178 specified viewing angles. The monitor employs a light matte anti-glare screen surface and has a 1500R (relatively steep) curve, to help draw the user in and potentially enhance viewing comfort. True 8-bit colour is supported, without dithering, whilst a flicker-free Quantum Dot backlight solution is used. This gives a typical maximum luminance of 300 cd/m² and a colour gamut that extends comfortably beyond sRGB (~125%) for an extra dose of vibrancy. The monitor features a 100Hz refresh rate and also supports Adaptive-Sync and hence AMD FreeSync on compatible GPUs, with an assumed variable refresh rate range of 48 – 100Hz plus support for LFC (Low Framerate Compensation). A 4ms grey to grey response time is specified, which as usual for VA models in particular should be approached with caution.
The monitor includes multiple Low Blue Light (LBL) settings, or settings to that effect, including the ‘Eye Saver’ mode which significantly reduces blue light output and minimises contrast to a fraction of its native value. An alternative setting (‘Warm2’ for colour temperature) provides significant blue light reduction without a hit in contrast. The rear of the monitor is glossy white plastic, with the included stand offering tilt and height adjustment. A 100x100mm VESA bracket is included with the product if alternative mounting is preferred. The ports are located to the right of the stand neck, beneath a removable port cover. These include; DC power input (external ‘power brick’, HDMI 1.4, DP 1.2a and 2 Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C type) ports. Above this there is a 3.5mm headphone jack and 2 USB 2.0 ports. There are also 2 x 7W integrated speakers for reasonably rich and powerful sound output.
Further information can be found on the manufacturer’s website. The monitor is listed for <$900 in the US.
