IPS models with high resolutions and refresh rates are versatile choices for both work and play. The MSI MAG274QRX offers this combination, with a 240Hz refresh rate and WQHD resolution. This member of the Optix series features familiar styling – plenty of dark grey matte plastics, nothing too fussy. The top and side bezels are dual-stage, including a slim panel border flush with the rest of the screen plus a slender hard plastic outer part. The OSD (On Screen Display) is controlled by a joystick at the rear of the monitor, towards the right side as viewed from the front.

Nothing fancy

A 27″ 2560 x 1440 (WQHD or 1440p) IPS-type panel is employed, with 240Hz refresh rate. Adaptive-Sync is supported, including Nvidia’s ‘G-SYNC Compatible Mode’ with assumed 48 – 240Hz VRR range plus LFC. Other aspects to note include a 1000:1 static contrast ratio, 178° horizontal and vertical viewing angles and 10-bit colour (8-bit + FRC). A flicker-free WLED backlight provides a 350 cd/m² (400 cd/m² HDR peak) typical maximum luminance and 92% DCI-P3 (97% Adobe RGB, 126% sRGB) colour gamut. VESA DisplayHDR 400 support is offered, a basic level which allows the 10-bit colour processing to be put to good use alongside the wide gamut. It doesn’t necessitate local dimming to enhance contrast or a particularly high luminance level. Low Blue Light (LBL) settings are also included, promoting a more relaxing viewing experience.

A 1ms grey to grey response time is specified, which as usual you should approach with caution. ‘MPRT Sync’ also features, a strobe backlight setting that can be used in conjunction with Adaptive-Sync if you wish. The rear includes a strip of ‘Mystic Light’ RGB LEDs towards the top, customisable in the OSD or via one of the company’s apps. The stand attaches centrally and provides full ergonomic flexibility, including 130mm (5.12 inches) height adjustment and pivot into portrait. It can be removed to reveal 100 x 100mm VESA holes for alternative mounting. The ports face downwards and include; 2 HDMI 2.0 ports, DP 1.4, USB-C (15W PD, DP Alt Mode, upstream data), a 3.5mm headphone jack, 2 USB 3.0 ports (plus upstream) and a DC power input (external ‘power brick’). KVM is supported, allowing connected peripherals to be easily shared between multiple systems. A ‘4K’ UHD downsampling mode is also included, allowing a ‘4K’ signal to be used. Based on other offerings from the manufacturer we’d expect to see 120Hz Full HD support for the Xbox Series X/S and PS5 as well as 120Hz WQHD support for the former.
