It seems odd to list a “white chassis” as a headline feature, but this certainly makes the MSI G274QRFW stand out in the sea of black or dark grey 144Hz+ WQHD models available. The monitor makes extensive use of matte white plastic, with a little contrast offered by a medium grey MSI logo in the centre of the bottom bezel. The top and side bezels are dual-stage, with a slim black panel border flush with the rest of the screen, plus a slim hard white plastic outer component. The OSD (On Screen Display) is controlled by a red joystick at the rear of the screen, towards the right side as viewed from the front. Something many will rarely see, but it certainly stands out against its stark white background.

Brilliant white

The monitor adopts a 27″ 2560 x 1440 (WQHD or 1440p) IPS-type panel with support for 170Hz plus Adaptive-Sync, including Nvidia’s ‘G-SYNC Compatible’ and AMD FreeSync Premium with 48 – 170Hz VRR range plus LFC. A matte anti-glare screen surface is used, whilst a 1000:1 static contarst ratio, 178° horizontal and vertical viewing angles plus 10-bit (8-bit + FRC) colour is specified. A flicker-free (‘anti-flicker’) WLED backlight provides a 300 cd/m² typical maximum luminance and 90% DCI-P3 (125% sRGB, 88% Adobe RGB) colour gamut for a dash of extra vibrancy. The monitor has a TÜV Rheinland certified hardware solution for Low Blue Light (LBL), marketed as ‘Less Blue Light Pro’, which shifts the blue peak to less energetic wavelengths to help promote greater viewing comfort. Basic HDR10 support is included, shy of even the most basic VESA DisplayHDR level. This allows 10-bit colour to be used and for the reasonable gamut to be put to work. But doesn’t require local dimming, a particularly high luminance or wide gamut by HDR standards.

A 1ms grey to grey response time is specified, which should be treated with caution as usual. The rear is largely matte white plastic, with a strip of customisable ‘Mystic Light’ RGB LEDs towards the top right. The stand attaches centrally and can be removed to make way for an alternative 100 x 100mm VESA solution, if preferred. It offers full ergonomic flexibility, including 130mm (5.12 inches) height adjustment and pivot into portrait. The ports face downwards and include; DC power input (external ‘power brick’), 3.5mm headphone jack, 2 HDMI 2.0 ports and DP 1.4. The monitor includes a 60Hz ‘4K’ UHD downsampling mode to allow it to accept a ‘4K’ signal from devices including PCs, the PS5 and Xbox Series X. The manufacturer’s ‘Night Vision’ gamma enhancement also features, aiding the visibility of dark areas by lightening up dark shades without compromising contrast.
