With increasingly powerful GPUs and games consoles also able to make good use of the resolution, there’s a lot of interest in high refresh rate ‘4K’ UHD options. The AOC U28G2XU2 aims to serve gamers in both camps, including HDMI 2.1 for ‘4K’ UHD @120Hz plus VRR for systems including the PS5 and Xbox Series X. This is a notable addition, absent on the original U28G2X(U). The styling is similar to others in the ‘G2’ series, with black matte plastic combined with dark metallic-looking red elements. Including a stripe along the bottom and a ring where the stand neck and base join. The top and side bezels are dual-stage, with slim panel border flush with the rest of the screen plus thin hard plastic outer part. The OSD (On Screen Display) is controlled by buttons facing downwards on the bottom bezel, towards the right side as viewed from the front.

Black with a touch of red

A 28″ 3840 x 2160 (‘4K’ UHD) IPS-type panel is used, most likely the Innolux M280DCA-E7B AAS (Azimuthal Anchoring Switch) panel. This includes a light to very light matte anti-glare screen surface, with a 144Hz refresh rate supported. Adaptive-Sync also features, including AMD FreeSync Premium with 48 – 144Hz VRR range plus LFC. A 1000:1 static contrast ratio is specified alongside 178°/178° viewing angles and true 8-bit colour. A flicker-free WLED backlight provides a 370 cd/m² (400 cd/m²+ HDR peak) typical maximum luminance and 93% DCI-P3 colour gamut. Basic HDR10 support is included, at the VESA DisplayHDR 400 level. This allows effective use of the reasonably generous gamut alongside 10-bit colour processing, but doesn’t require particularly high luminance by HDR standards or require local dimming to enhance contrast. Rudimentary local dimming with 8 dimming zones is included on some other similar models, that may or may not be the case here.

A 1ms grey response time is specified alongside a 1ms MPRT response time, using the MBR (Motion Blur Reduction) strobe backlight setting which can be used instead of VRR if you wish. A ‘Low Input Lag’ mode also features. The included stand attaches centrally using a quick-release mechanism and is fully adjustable, including 130mm (5.12 inches) height adjustment and pivot into portrait. The included stand can be removed to reveal provision for 100 x 100mm VESA mounting. The ports face downwards and include; 3 USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports (plus upstream), 2 HDMI 2.1 ports, 2 DP 1.4 ports (with DSC), a 3.5mm headphone jack and an AC power input (internal power converter). 2 x 3W speakers are included for basic sound output, whilst 2-device PbP and PiP is supported.

Black and red also combined at the rear
