The LG UltraGear 27GS95QE (27GS95QE-B owing to the largely black rear) of the UltraGear series homes right in on this craving, featuring OLED technology with a 240Hz refresh rate and WQHD resolution. The monitor has fairly sleek and angular styling, with dark matte materials used extensively. Including for the ‘penguin foot’ stand. The top and side bezels are dual-stage with slender panel border flush with the rest of the screen, plus slim hard plastic outer part. The bottom bezel includes a glossy lilac-tinted underhanging bar which features an IR sensor for the included remote. A joystick beneath the central region of the bottom bezel offers an alternative control method for the OSD (On Screen Display).
A 26.5″ 2560 x 1440 (QHD or 1440p) LG Display OLED panel is used with matte anti-glare screen surface. A 240Hz refresh rate is supported alongside VRR, with HDMI 2.1 VRR plus Adaptive-Sync supported. Technologies such as AMD Freeync Premium and Nvidia ‘G-SYNC Compatible’ are supported with 48 – 240Hz VRR range plus LFC. A 1.5m:1 static contrast ratio is specified alongside 178°/178° viewing angles. The monitor has a specified 275 cd/m² brightness at 100% APL (Average Picture Level) – or full white. This is a boost in brightness compared to the 27GR95QE which has a specified 200 cd/m² at 25% APL (Average Picture Level) – so for 25% of the screen displaying white with reduced brightness for 100% white. A colour gamut of 98.5% DCI-P3 is specified. The monitor will respond to HDR10 content, allowing it to put its per-pixel illumination and generous gamut to work with 10-bit colour processing and brightness pulses up to a specified 1000 cd/m². It’s also VESA DisplayBlack TrueBlack 400 certified. Hardware Calibration is also supported using LG Calibration Studio software and a compatible colorimeter.
A 0.03ms grey to grey response time is specified – as usual don’t pay too much attention to such figures, though OLED technology is known for its strength in this area. The rear of the screen is largely matte black plastic, with ‘Hexagon Lighting’ RGB LEDs surrounding the central bulk of the screen – this is customisable in the OSD. The stand attaches centrally via a quick-release mechanism and can be easily removed to reveal 100 x 100mm VESA holes for alternative mounting. The included stand provides full adjustability, including 110mm (4.33 inches) height adjustment and pivot into portrait. The ports face backwards in a recessed area beneath the stand attachment point and include; 2 HDMI 2.1 ports, DP 1.4 (with DSC), 2 USB 3.0 ports (plus Type-B upstream) and a DC power input (external ‘power brick’). A downwards-facing 4 pole 3.5mm headphone/microphone jack is also included beneath the bottom bezel, with support for DTS:X headsets.
