For mixed usage including competitive gaming, 240Hz monitors with QHD resolution can be very attractive. The HP OMEN 27qs is one such offering, with the usual pared-back styling associated with the series. Plenty of matte black plastic and a simple rectangular stand base, nothing too flashy. The top and side bezels are dual-stage with fairly slim panel border flush with the rest of the screen and slim hard outer part. The OSD (On Screen Display) is controlled by a joystick at the rear of the screen, towards the right side as viewed from the front.

Simple styling

A 27″ 2560 x 1440 (QHD or 1440p) IPS-type panel is adopted with 240Hz refresh rate and Adaptive-Sync. This allows VRR technologies including Nvidia ‘G-SYNC Compatible’ and AMD FreeSync Premium to be used, with 60 – 240Hz VRR range plus LFC. The screen is also AdaptiveSync Display 240 certified. A matte anti-glare screen surface is used and 1000:1 static contrast ratio, 178°/178° viewing angles and true 8-bit colour specified. A flicker-free WLED backlight provides a a 95% DCI-P3 colour gamut and 400 cd/m² typical maximum luminance. The screen is ‘Eyesafe’ certified (2.0 standard) by TÜV Rheinland, with the blue peak shifted to less energetic wavelengths and the amplitude of the peak reduced to potentially improve viewing comfort.

The monitor responds to HDR10 content in a basic way, with VESA DisplayHDR 400 support. This allows 10-bit colour processing to be used and the fairly generous colour gamut put to potentially good use. But it doesn’t require particularly high brightness by HDR standards or local dimming to enhance contrast. A 1ms grey to grey response time is specified, which as usual you shouldn’t pay too much attention to. The stand includes tilt, 100mm (3.94 inches) height adjustment and pivot into portrait. 100 x 100mm VESA support is facilitated using an included adaptor bracket. A diamond of RGB LED lighting surrounds the stand attachment point, configurable in the OSD or using OMEN Light Studio. The ports face downwards and include; AC power input (internal power converter), 2 HDMI 2.0 ports, DP 1.4, a 3.5mm headphone jack and 2 USB 3.0 ports plus Type-B upstream. 2 x 3W speakers are also included.

Some RGB at the rear

Further details can be found on the manufacturer’s website (more detailed PDF spec sheet). The monitor is listed for ~$430 USD.
