The combination of 2560 x 1440 (QHD) resolution and 27″ screen size is a popular choice for gaming and general-purpose use and is particularly attractive when combined with a triple-digit refresh rate. The HP OMEN 27q provides this experience, housed in a minimalistic chassis. This includes a simple rectangular stand base, with matte black plastic used extensively and a contrasting white ‘Omen’ logo on the bottom bezel. The top and side bezels are dual-stage, with slim panel border flush with the rest of the screen and slim hard plastic outer part. The OSD (On Screen Display) is controlled by a joystick at the rear of the screen, towards the right side as viewed from the front.

Minimalistic styling

A 27″ 2560 x 1440 (QHD or 1440p) IPS-type panel is employed, with 165Hz refresh rate and Adaptive-Sync support. Allowing VRR technologies including AMD FreeSync Premium to be used, with 60 – 165Hz VRR range plus LFC. The screen is also AdaptiveSync Display 165 certified. A matte anti-glare screen surface is used whilst 1000:1 static contrast ratio, 178°/178° viewing angles and true 8-bit colour is specified. A WLED backlight provides a 400 cd/m² typical maximum luminance and 95% DCI-P3 colour gamut. The monitor is ‘Eyesafe’ certified (2.0 standard) by TÜV Rheinland, with the blue peak shifted to less energetic wavelengths and the amplitude of the peak reduced to potentially improve viewing comfort.

The monitor offers basic HDR10 support, with 10-bit colour processing included and the colour gamut potentially put to good use. But no requirement for particularly high brightness by HDR standards or local dimming to enhance contrast. A 1ms grey to grey response time is specified (pinch of salt as usual) alongside a 1ms MPRT response time using the included strobe backlight setting. The stand includes tilt, 100mm (3.94 inches) height adjustment and pivot into portrait – with 100 x 100mm VESA support included using an included adaptor bracket. The ports face downwards and include; AC power input (internal power converter), 2 HDMI 2.0 ports, DP 1.4 and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
