The 3440 x 1440 resolution and ~34″ screen size offers a rich environment for productivity purposes. The Dell U3421WE plays to this strength, marketed as a productivity monitor. The monitor offers simply homely styling, with a matte silver plastic stand neck and shapely base. The bezels are reasonably slim at all sides, with a dual-stage design at the top and sides which includes a slender panel border that’s flush with the rest of the screen. And a slender hard plastic outer component. The OSD (On Screen Display) is controlled by a joystick at the rear of the monitor, towards the right side as viewed from the front.

A smart look

A 34″ 3440 x 1440 21:9 UltraWide IPS-type (In-Plane Switching or similar) panel is employed. This includes a 1900R (relatively gentle) curve, designed to draw you in a little bit and potentially enhance viewing comfort. Other aspects of note include a matte anti-glare screen surface, 1000:1 typical static contrast, 60Hz refresh rate and 178° horizontal and vertical viewing angles. The flicker-free WLED backlight yields a colour gamut of 95% DCI-P3 and a 300 cd/m² typical maximum luminance. ‘ComfortView’ Low Blue Light (LBL) settings are included to promote a more relaxing viewing environment. 10-bit colour is supported, whilst the monitor includes an sRGB emulation mode with a claimed 99% sRGB coverage and average DeltaE <2. A 5ms grey to grey response time is specified, but don't pay too much attention to this figure. The included stand attaches using a quick-release mechanism and can be replaced with an alternative VESA 100 solution if preferred. Tilt, swivel and height adjustment is included alongside 4° of 'slant' adjustment. This means you can slightly pivot the screen - but, as usual for a curved model, not all the way into portrait. The ports face downwards and include; AC power input (internal power converter), 2 HDMI 2.0 ports, DP 1.4, USB-C (90W PD and DP Alt Mode), 3.5mm audio output, 3 USB 3.2 ports (plus upstream) and an RJ45 ethernet port. Integrated stereo speakers are included. Outside of the main port area, at the bottom of the monitor for easy access, there is an additional USB 3.2 port with fast-charging capability and a USB-C downstream port with 15W charging. KVM functionality is included to allow peripheral assignment to multiple systems.

The ports

Further details can be found on this press release, where the monitor is incorrectly referred to as ‘U3431WE’ at some points. The ’21’ suffix denotes the model year and the datasheet confirms the correct designation. The monitor will be available from December globally with an initial price of ~$1200 USD.
