Although such panels can very very snappy these days, TN panels can still offer an edge in pixel responsiveness. This edge can be appreciated by some when considering very high refresh rates like 240Hz or 280Hz. The ASUS VG258QM is the TN variant of the VG259QM. The same ‘trademark TUF styling is used, with matte black plastic used extensively. A red-coloured ring surrounds the area where the stand neck joins the base and a silver-coloured central ASUS logo is included on the bottom bezel. The top and side bezels are dual-stage, including a slim panel border that’s flush with the rest of the screen plus a slim hard plastic outer component. The OSD (On Screen Display) is controlled by a joystick and accompanying buttons at the rear of the monitor, towards the right side as viewed from the front.
A 24.5″ 1920 x 1080 (Full HD) TN panel is used with a 1000:1 static contrast, matte anti-glare screen surface and 170°/160° viewing angles. Likely an AU Optronics panel, more specifically. A 280Hz refresh rate is supported, alongside Adaptive-Sync. This includes support for Nvidia’s ‘G-SYNC Compatible Mode’ and AMD FreeSync (VRR range TBD, possibly 40 – 280Hz plus LFC). The monitor has a specified 0.5ms grey to grey response time plus a 1ms MPRT response time using the ELMB Sync strobe backlight setting. This can be used at the same time as Adaptive-Sync if you wish – the ‘Sync’ element. As usual pay little attention to such specifications, however. The monitor uses ‘GameFast’ low input lag technology to minimise the signal delay. 8-bit colour is supported (6-bit + FRC assumed) and a flicker-free WLED backlight is employed, offering a 400 cd/m² typical maximum luminance and ~SRGB colour gamut. The monitor is VESA DisplayHDR 400 certified, only a basic HDR level where a very limited colour gamut and lack of local dimming suffices. The included stand offers full ergonomic flexibility and can be removed to reveal 100 x 100mm VESA holes for alternative mounting. The ports face downwards and include; DC power input (external ‘power brick’), 2 HDMI 2.0 ports, DP 1.2a and a 3.5mm headphone jack. 2 x 2W speakers are also included for basic sound output.
Further details can be found on the manufacturer’s website. The monitor is listed for ~$310 USD.
