27″ medium refresh rate QHD models are popular for gaming and general-purpose use – such models are relatively easy to run, compatible with a range of systems and provide a good and generally ‘comfortable’ pixel density. The ASUS VG27AQ3A of the TUF Gaming series is one such offering, with the usual robust-looking styling associated with the series. That includes a chunky matte black plastic stand and bottom bezel. The top and side bezels are dual-stage, with slim panel border flush with the rest of the screen plus thin hard plastic outer part. The OSD (On Screen Display) is controlled by a joystick and buttons at the rear of the screen, running down the right side as viewed from the front.

A rugged look

A 27″ 2560 x 1440 (QHD or 1440p) IPS-type panel is used, with a 180Hz refresh rate plus Adaptive-Sync supported. More specifically, the monitor is based on the AUO M270DAN08.D AHVA panel. VESA AdaptiveSync Display 180 certification is included and there’s support for Nvidia ‘G-SYNC Compatible’ plus AMD FreeSync Premium, with 48 – 180Hz VRR range and LFC. Other aspects of note include a matte anti-glare screen surface, 1000:1 static contrast ratio and 8-bit colour support. A flicker-free LED backlight delivers a 130% sRGB colour gamut and 250 cd/m² typical maximum luminance. Basic HDR10 support is offered, but the brightness and lack of local dimming specified means the monitor provides a limited performance there. 10-bit colour processing is enabled and the screen can put its reasonable colour gamut to good use under HDR, however.

Low Blue Light (LBL) settings are included to provide a more relaxing viewing experience, with a 1ms grey to gey response time specified. ELMB Sync also features, a strobe backlight setting which can be used alongside VRR if you wish. Variable overdrive is also noted, which aims to re-tune the aggressiveness of the pixel response times for lower refresh rates, reducing overshoot. ‘GameFast Input Technology’ is also specified as a nod towards low input lag. The included stand is tilt-only, with VESA 100 x 100mm support included if you wish to use an alternative mount. The ports face downwards and include; a 3.5mm headphone jack, DP 1.4, 2 HDMI 2.0 ports and DC power input (external ‘power brick’). 2 x 2W speakers are included for basic sound reproduction.

VESA holes at the rear

Further information can be found on the manufacturer’s website. The monitor is listed for ~$250 USD.
