27″ QHD models with IPS panels and medium refresh rates are highly desirable as versatile options for both work and play. The ASUS ROG Strix XG27ACG provides such an experience, with 180Hz QHD IPS panel. The monitor has a simple and relatively compact stand design, with extensive use of dark matte plastic used here and elsewhere on the monitor. A horizontal slat towards the front of the stand base allows a smartphone to be held there. The top and side bezels are dual-stage, with slim panel border flush with the rest of the screen plus thin hard plastic outer part. The OSD (On Screen Display) is controlled by a joystick and additional buttons at the rear of the screen, running down towards the bottom right as viewed from the front.

A 27″ 2560 x 1440 (QHD or 1440p) IPS-type panel is used, with 180Hz refresh rate and Adaptive-Sync support. This allows VRR technologies such as Nvidia ‘G-SYNC Compatible’ and AMD FreeSync to be used, with 48 – 180Hz range of operation (plus LFC). The screen is also AdaptiveSync Display 180 certified. A matte anti-glare screen surface is adopted, with 1000:1 static contrast ratio, 178°/178° viewing angles and 8-bit colour specified. A flicker-free WLED backlight delivers a 95% DCI-P3 (125% sRGB) colour gamut and 400 cd/m² typical maximum luminance. The screen is TÜV Rheinland certified with a Low Blue Light Hardware Solution, meaning the peak of blue light is shifted to slightly less energetic wavelengths to potentially enhance viewing comfort. Basic HDR10 support is included at the VESA DisplayHDR 400 level, allowing 10-bit colour processing and for the fairly generous colour gamut to be put to good use. No local dimming is specified and the brightness capability is limited by HDR standards, however.

A 1ms grey to grey response time is specified, but as usual don’t take this too seriously. Variable Overdrive is included to help re-optimise the pixel response algorithm for lower refresh rates, reducing overshoot. ELMB Sync also features, a strobe backlight setting that can be used at the same time as VRR if you wish. At the rear, an ‘Aura Sync’ RGB LED logo is included towards the top right. The stand is fully adjustable, including 120mm (4.72 inches) height adjustment and pivot into portrait. The stand can be removed with a quick-release mechanism, with 100 x 100mm VESA mounting supported for alternative mounting. The ports face downwards beneath a removable plastic cover and include; DC power input (external ‘power brick’), USB-C (7.5W PD and DP Alt Mode) HDMI 2.0, DP 1.4 (HBR3) and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
