The ASUS PG279Q was one of the earliest examples of a high refresh rate 27” IPS monitor. A number of 27” WQHD (2560 x 1440) high refresh rate panels have now been released since then, used in a variety of products including the slightly refreshed PG279QZ. The ASUS PG279QR and PG279QE offer further evolutions of the 27” high refresh rate ROG SWIFT product line. The ‘QR’ offers the usual modern ROG SWIFT additions including Aura Sync RGB LED lighting and a tripod stand design with ‘light signature’ projector. The ‘QE’ is somewhat pared back in terms of design, lacking the lighting features and offering a simple stand design. The bottom bezel is also a bit slimmer with regular matte plastic and a central ‘ASUS’ logo. Rather than multiple plastic textures and a ROG motif. The side bezels on both models are dual stage with a slim panel border that blends in when the screen is switched off. Plus a slim hard plastic outer component. The OSD (On Screen Display) is controlled by pressable buttons and a joystick at the rear of the monitor, towards the right side as viewed from in front.

The monitors use 27” 2560 x 1440 (WQHD) IPS-type (In Plane Switching or similar) panels with support for a 165Hz refresh rate and Nvidia G-SYNC. Key specifications include a 1000:1 static contrast ratio, 178°/178° horizontal/vertical viewing angles and 8-bit colour support. A light matte anti-glare screen surface is employed, keeping the image free from obvious graininess and helping preserve clarity and vibrancy better than some matte surfaces. A flicker-free WLED backlight is employed with a standard colour gamut (100% sRGB) and 350 cd/m² typical specified maximum luminance. Low Blue Light (LBL) settings are included to enhance viewing comfort, particularly useful in the evening where blue light exposure should be minimised. The rear of the monitors are dominated by matte black plastic. The ‘QR’ model includes some artistic etchings for the upper-right section and includes the Aura Sync RGB LED lighting feature in this region (ROG motif) which can be customised via the OSD or by using software. The stand is a satin-effect silver coloured matte plastic on the ‘QR’ and a more toned down matte black with dark red motif on the ‘QE’. The ports are down-firing, with a removable port cover included on the ‘QR’. The ports include; DC power input (external ‘power brick’), 3.5mm headphone jack, DP 1.2, HDMI 1.4 and 2 USB 3.0 ports.
