Update: Significant specifications change to this model. News piece below initially published 5th January 2020.

HDR (High Dynamic Range) has become something of a buzzword recently, with many monitors promising ‘HDR capability’ but in many cases missing the mark with poor implementations. For a convincing HDR performance from an LCD, a complex backlighting solution with plenty of dimming zones is greatly beneficial. The Acer X32 aims to deliver a highly dynamic HDR experience. As with other members of the Predator series, the monitor has a ‘sharp design’, with an angular metallic stand. The top and side bezels are a dual-stage arrangement, with a slim panel border that’s flush with the rest of the screen plus a slender hard plastic outer component. The OSD (On Screen Display) is controlled by pressable buttons on the underside of the bottom bezel, towards the right side.

A capable Predator

The monitor uses a 32” IPS-type (In-Plane Switching or similar) panel, more specifically the AU Optronics AHVA (Advanced Hyper-Viewing Angle) M320QAN02.8. This offers a 3840 x 2160 (‘4K’ UHD) resolution, 178°/178° viewing angles and a 1000:1 typical static contrast ratio (local dimming disabled). A 160Hz refresh rate is supported alongside G-SYNC on compatible systems, with a G-SYNC module that offers the ‘full fat’ variable refresh rate experience. As a ‘G-SYNC Ultimate’ monitor, the focus is also on HDR capability. A flicker-free Quantum Dot Mini LED backlight solution with 576 individually addressable dimming zones is used – an FALD (Full Array Local Dimming) array solution panel manufacturer AUO refers to as ‘AmLED’ (Adaptive Mini LED). This offers a peak luminance of 1200 cd/m², with the monitor being VESA DisplayHDR 1000 certified. A colour gamut of 99% Adobe RGB is specified. The monitor supports 10-bit colour, which alongside its impressive backlighting solution and colour gamut is put to good use for HDR10 content. The monitor is factory calibrated with a claimed DeltaE <2 and has a 1ms grey to grey response time specified (approach with usual caution). The included stand offers tilt, swivel and height (120mm or 4.72 inches) adjustment and can be removed to make way for an alternative 100 x 100mm VESA compatible solution. The ports face downwards and include; DP 1.4, 3 HDMI 2.0 ports and 4 USB 3.0 ports. 2 x 7W speakers are also included, for convenience.
