The combination of excellent fluidity, exceptional image quality and high refresh rate makes OLED attractive to gamers. The ASUS ROG Strix OLED XG27AQDMG follows on from the capable PG27AQDM, with a refreshed glossy 240Hz OLED panel. The monitor includes a fairly simple stand base, more compact than some gaming monitor designs. This has a horizontal slat towards the front which can act as a smartphone holder. The top and side bezels are ‘dual stage’ with slim panel border flush with the rest of the screen. With an overprovisioning of pixels (‘active area’) between the image and panel border to facilitate one of the burn-in mitigation measures. The OSD (On Screen Display) is controlled by a joystick and two buttons behind the central protrusion on the bottom bezel. An illuminated ROG motif is also included there, though this can be disabled if preferred.
A 26.5″ 2560 x 1440 (QHD or 1440p) LG Display WOLED panel is used with 240Hz refresh rate and RWBG subpixel layout. The screen surface is glossy with anti-reflective treatment – this isn’t expected to brighten up and take on tints in brighter lighting in the same way as QD-OLED surfaces. VRR is supported via Adaptive-Sync, including Nvidia ‘G-SYNC Compatible’ and AMD FreeSync Premium, with 40 – 240Hz VRR range plus LFC. The screen is AdaptiveSync Display 240Hz certified, too. Other aspects of note include a 1.5m:1 static contrast ratio, 178°/178° viewing angles and 10-bit colour support. The monitor is flicker-free with TÜV Low Blue Light (Hardware Solution) certification, due to the peak of blue light being shifted to less energetic wavelengths to aid viewing comfort. A 99% DCI-P3 colour gamut (135% sRGB) is specified – no luminance values are specified, but the screen is claimed to be “20% brighter” for full screen white SDR and it includes a ‘Uniform Brightness’ setting to avoid distracting ABL (Automatic Brightness Limiter) behaviour under SDR. A factory calibration is included with specified DeltaE <2.
The monitor responds to HDR10 content and can put its per-pixel illumination, 10-bit colour support, generous DCI-P3 coverage and decent bursts of brightness to good use there. Passive cooling is facilitated via a heatsink, rather than the screen relying on active cooling via a fan. A 0.03ms grey to grey response time is specified – as usual, don’t pay too much attention to the exact figure here but OLED technology is known for exceptional pixel responsiveness. At the rear, a customisable pixel effect ‘Aura Sync’ (RGB LED) ROG logo is included towards the right side. The included stand attaches centrally via a quick-release mechanism and offers full ergonomic flexibility, including 120mm (4.72 inches) height adjustment and pivot into portrait. 100 x 100mm VESA mounting is facilitated as an alternative with an adaptor bracket included. The ports face downwards and include; DC power input (external ‘power brick’), a 3.5mm headphone jack, 2 HDMI 2.0 ports, DP 1.4 (with DSC) and 2 USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports plus Type-B upstream.
