27″ QHD models with medium refresh rates are now relatively affordable, easy to drive and provide a good performance for a range of uses. The MSI MAG 27CQ6PF provides this experience, with a VA panel focused on strong contrast. The monitor includes a ‘tripod style’ stand with metal legs and rear element plus matte plastic elsewhere. The top and side bezels are dual-stage, with slim panel border flush with the rest of the screen plus thin hard plastic outer part. The OSD (On Screen Display) is controlled by a joystick at the rear, towards the right side as viewed from the front.

Dark matte materials

A 27″ 2560 x 1440 (QHD or 1440p) resolution VA panel is used, with 1500R (moderate) curve to draw you in a bit. The monitor has a matte anti-glare screen surface and has a specified 5000:1 static contrast ratio, 10-bit (8-bit + FRC) colour and 178°/178° viewing angles. A 180Hz refresh rate is supported alongside Adaptive-Sync, allowing technologies such as Nvidia ‘G-SYNC Compatible’ and AMD FreeSync to be used – with 48 – 180Hz VRR range plus LFC. A flicker-free WLED backlight provides a colour gamut of 105% sRGB (80% DCI-P3, 80% Adobe RGB) and 300 cd/m² typical maximum luminance.

The screen responds to HDR10 in a basic way, with 10-bit colour processing being put to use. But a low brightness by HDR standards, no requirement for local dimming and an insufficient colour gamut for appropriate HDR output. Low Blue Light (LBL) settings are included to aid relaxing viewing and a ‘0.5ms min’ grey to grey response time is specified – which should be taken with a huge dose of salt. The stand includes tilt, swivel and height (130mm or 5.12 inches) adjustment, with provision for 100 x 100mm VESA mounting also included. The ports face downwards and include; a AC power input (internal power converter), 2 HDMI 2.0 ports, DP 1.4 and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Good adjustability

Further details can be found on the manufacturer’s website. The monitor is listed for ~$190 USD.
