The MSI MAG274QRF-QD has remained a popular model since it’s release several years back, offering a strong all-round performance with strong colour vibrancy and a generous gamut. The MSI MAG 274QRF QD E2 follows this up with a newer 180Hz panel. The monitor has a simple homely look with plenty of dark matte plastics and rectangular stand base. The top and side bezels are dual-stage, with slim panel border flush with the rest of the screen plus thin hard plastic outer part. The OSD (On Screen Display) is controlled by a joystick at the rear of the screen, towards the right side as viewed from the front.

The front

A 27″ 2560 x 1440 (QHD or 1440p) IPS-type panel is adopted with support for a 180Hz refresh rate. Adaptive-Sync also features, allowing VRR technologies such as Nvidia ‘G-SYNC Compatible’ and AMD FreeSync to be used with 48 – 180Hz VRR range plus LFC. Other aspects of note include a matte anti-glare screen surface, 1000:1 static contrast ratio, 178°/178° viewing angles and 10-bit (8-bit + FRC) colour support. A flicker-free QD LED backlight provides a 400 cd/m² typical maximum luminance and 98% DCI-P3 (94% Adobe RGB, 150% sRGB) colour gamut. So a strong potential for extra vibrancy and decent flexibility for colour-sensitive work within multiple colour spaces. Basic HDR10 support is offered with VESA DisplayHDR 400 certification, allowing the screen to use 10-bit colour processing and put its generous DCI-P3 gamut to good use. But not requiring high brightness by HDR standards and without local dimming specified.

A 1ms grey to grey response time is specified, which should be approached with the usual caution. The included stand attaches centrally and can be removed to reveal provision for alternative 75 x 75mm VESA mounting. A strip of ‘Mystic Light’ RGB LEDs is located above the stand attachment point. The stand is fully adjustable, including 130mm (5.12 inches) height adjustment and pivot into portrait. The ports face downwards and include; DC power input (external ‘power brick’), a 3.5mm headphone jack, 2 HDMI 2.0 ports, DP 1.4, USB-C (65W PD, DP Alt Mode, upstream data) and 2 USB 2.0 ports (plus Type-B upstream). KVM is supported, allowing easy display input switching and USB peripheral switching between 2 systems.
