Ultrawide models are found in a variety of sizes, resolutions, refresh rates and panel types. The LG 49GR85DC (49GR85DC-B owing to mainly black rear) of the UltraGear series goes for the very immersive and very wide route with a high refresh rate 32:9 VA panel. The monitor has sharp-lined styling with a broad ‘penguin-foot’ stand base. The top and side bezels are dual-stage with panel border flush with the rest of the screen and slim hard plastic outer part. The OSD (On Screen Display) is controlled by a joystick facing downwards beneath the central logo on the bottom bezel.

Exceptional width

A 49″ VA panel is adopted with 5120 x 1440 (DQHD or Dual QHD) resolution and 1000R curve to draw you in a bit plus potentially improve ergonomics and viewing comfort. This is like having 2 x 27″ 2560 x 1440 (QHD or 1440p) screens in one, side by side. A 240Hz refresh rate is supported alongside Adaptive-Sync (and likely HDMI 2.1 VRR), including Nvidia ‘G-SYNC Compatible’ and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro with 96 – 240Hz VRR range plus LFC. Other points to note include a 2500:1 static contrast ratio, 178°/178° viewing angles and 10-bit colour support. A flicker-free (‘flicker safe’) backlight provides a 95% DCI-P3 colour gamut and 450 cd/m² (1000 cd/m²+ HDR peak) typical maximum luminance. The monitor responds to HDR10 content in a dynamic way, with VESA DisplayHDR 1000 support. This allows the colour gamut and 10-bit colour to be put to good use, alongside ‘effective’ local dimming. The exact backlight arrangement isn’t specified and this is something manufacturers would usually rave about if FALD or ‘Mini LED’ is used – so we’d assume edge-lit local dimming with <70 zones.

A 1ms grey to grey response time is specified, with a huge pinch of salt required. Dynamic Action Sync (DAS) is also specified as a nod towards low input lag. The screen attaches to its stand centrally with a quick-release mechanism – it can be removed to reveal 100 x 100mm VESA holes for alternative mounting. The stand offers tilt, swivel and height (110mm or 4.33 inches) adjustment. ‘Hexagon Lighting’ is also included, a customisable RGB LED solution with LEDs located at the side edges of the bulkier central area of the screen at the rear. The ports are located to the left of the stand attachment point, in a recessed area, and include 2 HDMI 2.1 ports, DP 1.4, 2 USB 3.0 ports (plus Type-B upstream) and an AC power input (internal power converter). The monitor supports 2-device PbP and PiP and includes a downwards-facing 4 pole 3.5mm headphone/microphone jack beneath the bottom bezel, with support for DTS:X headsets.
