According to many users, the 31.5″ and ‘4K’ UHD resolution is a match made in heaven. The Dell UP3221Q adopts this combination and adds in some rather fancy additional features as well. This member of the UltraSharp Premium (‘UP’) series includes a detachable shading hood to minimise light striking the screen from the top and sides. It has a robust-looking bottom bezel, which houses a central ‘Calman Powered’ colorimeter that flips out to take measurements at the bottom of the screen when using the integrated calibration feature of the monitor. The top and side bezels are slimmer, with a dual stage design that includes a slim panel border that’s flush with the rest of the screen. And a slim hard plastic outer component. The OSD (On Screen Display) is controlled by a joystick at the rear of the monitor, towards the right side as viewed from the front.

Neatly hidden integrated colorimeter

A 31.5″ 3840 x 2160 (‘4K’ UHD) IPS-type panel is employed. This includes a very light matte anti-glare screen surface, for decent glare handling without impeding the image vibrancy or clarity as much as ‘stronger’ matte screen surface. Other aspects of note include a 60Hz refresh rate, 1300:1 static contrast and 178° horizontal and vertical viewing angles. True 10-bit colour is supported, whilst the monitor includes a broad range of factory-calibrated presets. Average Delta values include <1 for DCI-P3 and sRGB, <2 for Adobe RGB and <3.5 for the HLG and ST 2084 HDR standards. The monitor can be hardware-calibrated (user-addressable LUT) with the integrated colorimeter - or an external colorimeter or spectrophotometer. A Mini LED backlight is included with 2000 dimming zones, delivering a typical luminance of 350 cd/m² for SDR and 1000 cd/m² for HDR. A colour gamut of 99.8% DCI-P3, 93% Adobe RGB and 83% Rec. 2020 is specified. VESA DisplayHDR 1000 certification is included, allowing the monitor to put its bit-depth, colour gamut and backlighting solution to excellent use for HDR10 content. A 6ms grey to grey response time is specified, which as usual you should approach with caution. The included stand offers full ergonomic flexibility, attaching centrally with a quick-release mechanism. It can be replaced by an alternative 100 x 100mm VESA solution if you wish. The ports face downwards and include; AC power input (internal power converter), 2 HDMI 2.0 ports, DP 1.4, 3.5mm audio output, Thunderbolt 3 upstream (90W PD and DP Alt Mode) and downstream (15W PD) and 2 'SuperSpeed' USB 3.2 ports. An easy-access external colorimeter port is included outside of this main port area, at the bottom of the monitor and towards the left side as viewed from in front. This is a USB port specifically reserved for hardware-calibration using a colorimeter or spectrophotometer.
