Some like their monitors on the large side with a good resolution – for plenty of ‘desktop real estate’ The Dell UltraSharp U4924DW offers this with a real width-bias, 49″ with a DQHD (Dual Quad High Definition) resolution which is like having 2 x 27″ QHD models combined side by side. The usual smart UltraSharp styling is included, with reasonably compact satin-finish silver plastic stand base and matte black plastic bottom bezel. As is common on monitors these days, dual-stage bezels are used at the top and sides with fairly slender panel border flush with the rest of the screen and slim hard plastic outer part. The OSD (On Screen Display) is controlled by a joystick at the rear, towards the right side as viewed from the front. A separate dedicated power button is also included.

A smart appearance

A 49″ 5120 x 1440 (DQHD or Dual QHD) LG Display IPS Black panel is adopted, with slight curve designed to improve viewing comfort. This is an enhanced contrast variant of IPS, with a specified 2000:1 static contrast ratio which is double the usual specified 1000:1. A matte anti-glare screen surface is included, 60Hz refresh rate supported and 178°/178° viewing angles plus 10-bit colour specified. A flicker-free WLED backlight provides a 98% DCI-P3 colour gamut and 350 cd/m² typical maximum luminance, with specified factory calibration of DeltaE <2. The monitor includes 'ComfortView Plus', which shifts the peak of blue light to slightly less energetic wavelengths, potentially enhancing viewing comfort.

A 5ms grey to grey response time is specified (usual pinch of salt required). The stand is fully adjustable, including 120mm (4.72 inches) height adjustment and pivot into portrait. Removing the stand with the quick-release button reveals provision for 100 x 100mm and 200 x 100mm VESA mounting. The ports face downwards and include; AC power input (internal power converter), 2 HDMI ports, DP 1.4, USB-C (90W PD, DP Alt Mode, upstream data), a 3.5mm audio output, USB-C upstream (data only), 4 USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports and and an RJ45 port. A 5th USB 3.2 Gen2 port and 2 USB-C downstream ports are located at the bottom of the screen, outside the main port area for easy access. These face forwards in a protruding pop-out box to the left of centre (viewed from front) and they can be popped up into the screen if you don’t wish to use them. 2 x 9W speakers are included and KVM is supported to allow easy display switching and peripheral sharing between 2 systems. The monitor also supports ‘iMST’, which allows it to be split into two separate 27″ QHD displays for a multi-display experience with a single monitor.

An expansive rear
