For gamers and other users after an immersive experience and strong contrast, high refresh rate 31.5″ 2560 x 1440 models can be appealing. There are plenty to choose from now, although the upper end for the refresh rate is usually 144Hz The Dell S3220DGF provides an alternative, with slightly higher refresh rate and the company’s fairly simple and not overly in-your-face (gamer) styling. Matte black plastics are combined with silver plastics. Dual-stage bezels are employed at the top and sides, giving a ‘frameless’ appearance. There is a slender hard outer bezel as well as a slim panel border, which blends in seamlessly when the monitor is switched off. The OSD (On Screen Display) is controlled by pressable buttons on the underside of the bottom bezel, towards the right. Dell’s usual vertical slit white power LED also features.

A big curved screen

The monitor uses a 31.5″ VA (Vertical Alignment) panel with 2560 x 1440 (WQHD) resolution and 1800R curve, designed to offer an immersive experience. This is complemented by a 165Hz refresh rate and support for Adaptive-Sync (including AMD FreeSync 2) with a variable refresh rate range of 48 – 165Hz (plus LFC). A light matte anti-glare screen surface is used, whilst a 3000:1 static contrast ratio and 178°/178° horizontal/vertical viewing angles are specified. 10-bit colour is also supported, whilst a 4ms grey to grey response time is specified (as usual, take with salt). A flicker-free WLED backlight is used with a generous colour gamut of 92.4% DCI-P3 and a 400 cd/m² typical maximum luminance. The monitor is VESA DisplayHDR 400 certified, the lowest level of HDR specification certified for by VESA. This does not mandate local dimming or high luminance levels, but allows the monitor to put its colour gamut and 10-bit colour processing to good use. The rear of the monitor is matte silver plastic, with a blue-coloured Dell logo for a little visual interest. The included stand offers height, tilt and swivel adjustment and can be removed using a quick-release mechanism to make way for an alternative 100 x 100mm VESA compatible solution. The ports are down-firing and include; DP 1.2a, 2 HDMI 2.0 ports, 3 USB 3.0 ports (1 x Type-C, 2 x Type A), a 3.5mm headphone jack and 3.5mm audio input. The monitor is available with an initial price of $599.99 USD.
