The range of OLED monitors designed with gamers in mind continues to expand. The Dell Alienware AW2725Q is a pixel-dense entertainment offering built around Samsung Display QD-OLED technology. The styling is quite ‘muted’ for the brand, which some will appreciate, with a gently curved but simple stand neck. A subtle indigo colour is used as part of this so-called ‘AW30 design’. The top and side bezels of the screen are dual-stage with slim panel border flush with the rest of the screen plus thin hard plastic outer part. An ‘active area’ around the image, used for a pixel shifting feature designed to minimise image retention, is also included. The OSD (On Screen Display) is controlled by a joystick beneath the central region of the bottom bezel. Customisable ‘AlienFX’ RGB LED lighting is included for the power status ring, surrounding a power button towards the right side.

A simpler design

A 26.7″ Samsung Display QD-OLED (Quantum Dot OLED) panel is used, supporting a 3840 x 2160 (‘4K’ UHD) resolution and 240Hz refresh rate. HDMI 2.1 is included for up to 120Hz ‘4K’ UHD on games consoles such as the Xbox Series X and PS5, as well as providing VRR support. Adaptive-Sync can also be used on compatible GPUs and systems, allowing technologies including Nvidia ‘G-SYNC Compatible’ and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro to be used. The monitor is AdaptiveSync Display 240, G-SYNC Compatible and FreeSync Premium Pro certified. A 1.5m:1 static contrast ratio, 10-bit colour support and 178°/178° viewing angles are specified. The monitor is factory calibrated with DeltaE <2 and has 'flicker-free' illumination, with 'ComfortView Plus' included - the monitor offers less energetic blue light emission without compromising colour temperature, potentially improving viewing comfort (TÜV Rheinland certified hardware solution). A 250 cd/m² (1000 cd/m² HDR peak, 3% APL) typical maximum luminance is specified alongside 99% DCI-P3 colour space coverage.

The monitor responds to HDR10 content with VESA DisplayHDR True Black 400 certification, with additional HDR modes designed for higher brightness peaks. Dolby Vision is also supported as an alternative to HDR10. Under HDR the monitor can but its per-pixel dimming, generous gamut and 10-bit+ colour support to good use with some good brightness pulses. A 0.03ms grey to grey response time is specified, with OLED technology known for exceptional pixel responsiveness. An additional ‘AlienFX’ lighting element is included at the rear, in the form of an ‘Alien Head’ logo. The stand attaches centrally via a quick-release mechanism and can be removed to reveal provision for 100 x 100mm VESA mounting. The included stand is fully adjustable, including 110mm (4.33 inches) height adjustment and pivot into portrait. The ports face downwards and include; AC power input (internal power converter), 2 USB 3.2 Gen1 ports (plus Type-B upstream), 2 HDMI 2.1 ports (high bandwidth FRL, 1 port with eARC) and DP 1.4 (with DSC). A third USB 3.2 Gen1 port and USB-C (15W PD) downstream port is located at the bottom of the screen, for easy access. The 3-year premium warranty included with the monitor covers OLED burn-in “for additional peace of mind”.

'AlienFX' lighting

The monitor is released March 2024 with an RRP ~$900 USD.
