High refresh rates can be particularly attractive for competitive gaming, minimising perceived blur and improving ‘connected feel’ when accompanied by a suitably high frame rate. The Dell Alienware AW2523HF is one such offering, with 360Hz IPS panel that focuses on a responsive gaming experience. Aesthetically, the monitor appears as something of a hybrid between previous Alienware offerings and ‘G’ series gaming monitors from the company. The stand is more compact than usual, with matte dark grey plastic the material of choice. Part of the ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ colour scheme. The bottom top and side bezels are dual-stage, with slim panel border flush with the rest of the screen and thin hard plastic outer part. The OSD (On Screen Display) is controlled by a joystick which faces downwards beneath the central region of the bottom bezel. A dedicated power button with accompanying white power LED faces downwards towards the right side.

A more compact stand design

A 24.5″ 1920 x 1080 (Full HD) IPS-type panel is used, assumed to be an AUO AHVA (Advanced Hyper-Viewing Angle) panel. This includes a medium matte anti-glare screen surface with 1000:1 static contrast ratio, 178°/178° viewing angles and true 8-bit colour support included. A 360Hz refresh rate is offered alongside Adaptive-Sync, including AMD FreeSync Premium with 48 – 360Hz VRR range plus LFC. The monitor is also AdaptiveSync Display 360 certified. A flicker-free WLED backlight provides a 400 cd/m² typical maximum luminance and 99% sRGB colour gamut. Basic HDR10 support is included, allowing the monitor to respond to HDR10 content with 10-bit colour processing used. The brightness level, colour gamut and lack of specified local dimming all limit its HDR output, however.

A 1ms or ‘0.5ms min’ grey to grey response time is specified, but as usual pay little attention to these figures. ‘ComfortView’ Low Blue Light (LBL) settings are included to promote a more relaxing viewing experience. The rear of the monitor combines dark grey matte plastic and some black plastic elements. Notably absent are any ‘AlienFX’ RGB LED elements. A retractable headphone hook is included at the left side, as viewed from the front. The stand offers full adjustability, including 110mm (~4.3 inches) height adjustment and pivot into portrait. The stand is easily detached via a quick-release mechanism, revealing provision for 100 x 100mm VESA mounting as an alternative. The ports face downwards and include; AC power input (internal power converter), 2 USB 3.2 Gen1 ports (plus Type-B upstream), 2 HDMI 2.0 ports, DP 1.4 and 3.5mm audio line-out. Beneath the main port area, facing downwards on the bottom bezel for easy access, there are 2 further USB 3.2 Gen1 ports and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

No RGB LEDs here
