With this in mind even productivity monitors and screens designed for all-round usage are increasingly going beyond 60Hz. The Dell S2725DS exemplifies this, with its 100Hz IPS panel. The monitor offers the simple and smart styling often associated with the manufacturer’s ‘S-series’. The bezels are dual-stage with slim panel border flush with the rest of the screen plus thin hard plastic part – particularly slender at the top and sides. The OSD (On Screen Display) is controlled by a joystick at the rear, towards the right side as viewed from the front. A separate dedicated power button is also included.
A 27″ IPS-type panel is used with 2560 x 1440 (QHD or 1440p) resolution and support for a 100Hz refresh rate. VRR support is offered via ‘HDMI 2.1 VRR’, allowing ‘G-SYNC Compatible’ to be used via HDMI for example. A matte anti-glare screen surface is employed whilst a 1500:1 static contrast ratio (respectable for the panel type), 178°/178° viewing angles and 8-bit colour are specified. A flicker-free WLED backlight provides a 350 cd/m² typical maximum luminance and 99% sRGB colour gamut. The monitor includes ‘ComfortView Plus’ (TÜV Rheinland certified Low Blue Light Hardware Solution), with the peak of blue light shifted to slightly less energetic wavelengths, potentially enhancing viewing comfort. A 4ms grey to grey response time is specified, but treat with the usual dose of scepticism. The stand is fully adjustable, including 130mm (5.12 inches) height adjustment and pivot into portrait. It can be removed via quick-release mechanism to reveal provision for 100 x 100mm VESA mounting. The ports mainly face downwards and include; HDMI ‘2.1’ (with ‘HDMI 2.1 VRR’ support), DP 1.2a and AC power input (internal power converter). An additional HDMI ‘2.1’ (with ‘HDMI 2.1 VRR’ support) faces sideways for easy access. 2 x 5W speakers are included for potentially quite rich sound output.
The monitor is listed for ~$230 USD (~£340), with release from March 21st 2024.
