The MSI G241 of the Optix series offers a combination of screen size, refresh rate and affordability that some will find very appealing. The G271 fits in for those who prefer a somewhat larger screen. These models are marketed towards those involved in eSports, but obviously they’ll have broader appeal. They aren’t to be confused with models bearing the same designation plus ‘VC’ at the end. The monitors have a basic aesthetic with plenty of matte black plastic. The stand base has a Y-shaped design and the bottom bezel is quite thick, with a central MSI logo. The top and side bezels are slim, a dual-stage design including a sleek panel border that’s flush with the rest of the screen and a slim hard outer component. The OSD (On Screen Display) is controlled by a red joystick at the rear of the monitor, towards the right side as viewed from in front.
A 23.8″ (G24) and 27″ (G27) panel is used with 1920 x 1080 Full HD resolution and medium matte anti-glare screen surface. The products are based on Panda IPS-type (In-Plane Switching type) panels, similar to what is seen in the capable AOC 24G2(U). A 144Hz refresh rate is supported alongside Adaptive-Sync. This includes AMD FreeSync Premium, with a 48 – 144Hz variable refresh rate range plus LFC (Low Framerate Compensation). Other aspects to note include a 1000:1 specified static contrast, 8-bit colour support (6-bit + FRC dithering) and 178° horizontal and vertical viewing angles. A flicker-free backlight is employed, offering a typical maximum luminance of 250 cd/m² and a generous specified 95% DCI-P3 (128% sRGB) colour gamut for the smaller model and 92% DCI-P3 (120% sRGB) for the larger model. Low Blue Light (LBL) settings are included to enhance relaxing viewing, whilst a ‘Night Vision’ gamma enhancement feature is included to enhance visibility in dark scenes. A 1ms response time is misleadingly specified – this isn’t a grey to grey value but rather an MPRT value specified using the ‘Anti Motion Blur’ strobe backlight feature. The included stand is tilt-only, although 100 x 100mm VESA holes are included for alternative mounting. The ports face downwards and include; AC power input (internal power converter), 2 HDMI 1.4 ports, DP 1.2 and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
Further information on the G24 and G27 can be found on the manufacturer’s website. The monitors are available in various regions including the US and UK for ~$190 (~£220) and ~$240 (~£260) for the 23.8″ and 27″ models, respectively.
