Philips 328M6FJMB 2560 x 1440 curved 144Hz VA model
Update: Update on availability (or lack of). News piece below initially published 20th April 2017.
Since it was unveiled earlier in the year, the AOC AG322QCX has generated quite a lot of interest for its combination of 144Hz VA panel and 2560 x 1440 (WQHD) resolution. Philips, which is closely allied to AOC (both members of TPV Technology), has its own similar model in production. The Philips 328M6FJMB, memorably named as the company’s products usually are, makes use of a similar 144Hz 2560 x 1440 VA panel but offers alternative features and aesthetics. The stand design is quite angular and the bezels quite slender, with a dual-stage design. This comprises a hard-plastic outer layer and a fairly slim panel border that blends in seamlessly when the monitor is switched off. The bottom bezel is glossy plastic and houses some ‘Ambiglow’ LEDs. These glow various colours which match the content on the screen, and from our experience with similar products can usually be used as a bias light (static white).
The panel used is a 31.5” VA (Vertical Alignment) model with 2560 x 1440 resolution and 144Hz refresh rate. As with the AOC model, this will be a Samsung panel with a relatively light matte screen surface for a relatively ‘clean’ (ungrainy) image. This has a relatively steep 1800R curve, helping to create a slightly more engrossing experience and potentially enhancing viewing comfort by bringing the edges of the screen closer to your eyes. The screen also supports Adaptive-Sync and hence AMD FreeSync, with a variable refresh rate range of 48 – 144Hz. True 8-bit colour is supported (16.7 million colours), whilst the flicker-free backlight supports a colour gamut of 120% sRGB (100% NTSC). In other words; a rather wide gamut which is capable of producing highly saturated colours. Other aspects of the specification to note include a 4ms grey to grey response time (don’t read too much into that), a 3000:1 static contrast ratio and 178°/178° viewing angles. A ‘LowBlue’ Low Blue Light (LBL) setting also features to aid relaxing evening viewing.
The included stand provides tilt and height adjustment. 100 x 100mm VESA mounting is also supported. The ports include; VGA, 2 DP 1.2a ports (supports Adaptive-Sync), HDMI 1.4 and HDMI 2.0 (the HDMI ports may support Adaptive-Sync as well), 3.5mm headphone jack and 3.5mm audio input. 2 x 5W speakers are also provided for integrated sound output. Further details can be found on this PDF. from the manufacturer. This model is only intended for a limited number of markets. We have received confirmation from the Philips Product Manager (for displays within EU) that there are no current plans to release this in Europe and we haven’t received confirmation of plans for a US release either.
