The combination of 3440 x 1440 resolution and ~34″ screen size is attractive for both work and play. UltraWide models with a ~38″ screen and 3840 x 1600 resolution scale this up for extra immersion and greater ‘desktop real-estate’. The MSI MEG381CQR Plus offers this experience, with a focus on high refresh rate gaming. The front includes a powder-coated metal ‘penguin-foot’ stand base and a chunky bottom bezel which houses customisable RGB LED lighting. This can be customised to various colours and patterns via the OSD or an app (‘Mystic Light’), or can provide a visual alert if certain ‘critical’ events occur in games such as your character being low on health (‘GameSense’). A small OLED display and control wheel is found on the bottom left corner to display information such as refresh rate or GPU frequency. The top and side bezels are dual-stage, with a slim panel border flush with the rest of the screen and a slender hard plastic outer part. A joystick at the rear of the screen, towards the right side as viewed from the front, is the main OSD (On Screen Display) control method.
The monitor adopts a 37.5″ 3840 x 1600 (21:9 UltraWide) LG Display IPS panel with 2300R (relatively gentle) curve. This curve is designed to draw you into the experience a bit and potentially enhance viewing comfort, without feeling unnatural. A 175Hz refresh rate is supported alongside ‘full fat’ G-SYNC via a G-SYNC Ultimate module. Adaptive-Sync can also be used to access the module, delivering FreeSync to compatible AMD GPUs. A light matte anti-glare is included, whilst a 1000:1 static contrast ratio is specified alongside 178°/178° viewing angles and 10-bit colour (8-bit + FRC). A flicker-free WLED backlight provides a 600 cd/m² peak luminance and 96.2% DCI-P3 colour gamut.
VESA DisplayHDR 600 support is included, allowing the screen to put its fairly generous gamut and 10-bit processing to good use. The reasonably high luminance level can also be put to work alongside some degree of local dimming. A 1ms grey to grey response time is specified (approach with caution). The stand attaches centrally via a quick-release mechanism and can be removed to reveal 100 x 100mm VESA holes for alternative mounting. The stand offers tilt, swivel and height adjustment (90mm or 3.54 inches). Additional ‘Mystic Light’ LEDs are found above and to the left of the stand neck. The ports mainly include but are not limited to; 2 HDMI 2.0 ports, DP 1.4, USB-C, USB-A and a 3.5mm headphone jack. A mouse bungee is also included to keep your mouse cable in place without dragging on the desk edge.
Further details can be found on this page (Chinese, requires translation) on Taobao. The monitor is expected to start shipping October 2021. Further information on availability and pricing still to come.
