3440 x 1440 models with VA panels offer an affordable entry into the high refresh rate UltraWide space. The Gigabyte G34WQC is the first UltraWide model offered by the company, who are relatively new to the monitor scene but well established in the PC market more broadly. The monitor has a robust appearance with plenty of dark grey and black matte plastic, with a broad low-profile ‘stepped’ design for the stand base. The top and side bezels are ‘dual-stage’, with a slender panel border that’s flush with the rest of the screen. Plus a slim hard plastic outer component. The OSD (On Screen Display) is controlled by a joystick at the rear of the monitor, towards the bottom right as viewed from in front.
The monitor adopts a 34″ Samsung SVA (‘Super’ Vertical Alignment)* 21:9 UltraWide panel with 3440 x 1440 resolution and 144Hz refresh rate. Adaptive-Sync is supported, including Nvidia’s ‘G-SYNC Compatible Mode’ and AMD FreeSync Premium, with a 48 – 144Hz VRR range plus LFC. The screen has a 1500R curve, to draw you into the experience a little bit, with a light matte anti-glare finish. A 3000:1 static contrast ratio, 178° horizontal and vertical and true 8-bit colour is specified. A flicker-free WLED backlight is used, offering a 350 cd/m² typical maximum luminance (boosts to 400 cd/m²+ for HDR) and 90% DCI-P3 (120% sRGB) colour space coverage. VESA DisplayHDR 400 is supported, allowing the use of a 10-bit pipeline and putting the colour gamut to good use. But not necessitating particularly high brightness levels or local dimming – so only a basic HDR experience. A 1ms MPRT response time is specified using the included ‘Aim Stabilizer’ strobe backlight setting. The included stand offers tilt and height (100mm or 3.94 inches) adjustment. 100 x 100mm VESA holes are included for alternative mounting. The ports face downwards and include; AC power input (internal power converter), 2 HDMI 2.0 ports, 2 DP 1.4 ports and a 3.5mm headphone jack. 2 x 2W speakers are included for basic sound output.
Further details can be found on the manufacturer’s website. The monitor is listed for ~£400.
*Following Samsung’s suspension of LCD production, the panel has been replaced by an alternative VA panel produced by CSOT. Similar image characteristics are expected, with the updated model designated G34WQC A.
